Vietnamese player causes controversy for being included in the AFF Cup 2024 best squad

On the afternoon of January 16, the Southeast Asian Football Federation's homepage announced 11 positions in the AFF Cup 2024 best squad voted by fans. The biggest surprise came from Bui Hoang Viet Anh. The 1999-born midfielder made it into the squad despite playing less well than many of his teammates.

Coach Kim Sang-sik only used Bui Hoang Viet Anh in the group stage match against the Philippines. The Hanoi Police Club player played well. He was partly at fault for the goal that Geyoso scored against Nguyen Filip. The central defenders who regularly play for the Vietnam team include Tien Dung, Thanh Chung, Xuan Manh and Duy Manh. Unfortunately, most of them did not make it to this list.

In the remaining positions, there is not much to say because the selected players all proved their own qualities. In the goal, Nguyen Dinh Trieu is the number 1 star.

In addition to Bui Hoang Viet Anh, the Vietnamese team has Bui Tien Dung in the defense. The remaining two positions belong to the Thai team: fullback Nicholas Mickelson and center-back Pansa Hemviboon. Notably, Pansa scored an own goal after Tuan Hai's shot, causing the Thai team to suffer a bitter defeat in the second leg of the AFF Cup 2024 final.

Vietnam has two more players in midfield, Nguyen Quang Hai and Nguyen Hai Long. Hoang Duc has played very well since the semi-finals but did not receive many votes. Kyoga Nakamura (Singapore) and Sandro Reyes (Philippines) were selected for their outstanding performances and important roles in the national team.

The forward line has the mark of Nguyen Xuan Son and Nguyen Tien Linh. This is indisputable as the attacking duo of the Vietnamese team has been excellent in this year’s tournament.
