The flash flood caused by storm No. 10 (Bualoi) caused heavy damage to Mo Vang Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities (PTDTBT) (Mo Vang Commune, Lao Cai ). Heavy rain caused the school to be flooded about 4m deep, the storm blew off the roof of the entire 2-storey classroom building, damaging all teaching equipment and the structure of the building.

Recalling the moment the floodwaters hit, Ms. Bui Thi Thieu (homeroom teacher of class 9A) is still in shock. The heavy rain continued continuously, causing the water from Thip stream, Ngoi Thia stream and surrounding streams to rise, sweeping away mud, trees and everything on the road. The school library, rice warehouse and many books and documents were swept away.

" In the face of danger, teachers evacuated students to higher ground, took them to the committee, the infirmary and the nearby primary school. Each place had teachers on duty. As for teachers, because the cultural house did not have enough space, they had to take shelter at people's houses. Others returned to school, climbed ladders to the roof to sleep, " Ms. Thieu shared emotionally.

According to Mr. Le Ba Luong - Principal of Mo Vang Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, the total damage after the storm is estimated at nearly 3 billion VND. Although there were no casualties, the damage to the school's facilities and equipment was huge.

Specifically, the classroom block, which included 2 regular classrooms and 3 departmental classrooms, was severely affected. One room, which had not yet been officially handed over, had both its door and electrical system broken. All textbooks and reference materials in the library (estimated at 5,000 books) were submerged in floodwater and mud. The administrative block, which was awaiting handover, had its door and electrical system broken.

More seriously, a multi-purpose building and 11 garages collapsed, about 250m of fence was buried (of which 100m has not been officially handed over). Fire protection system, medical equipment, supplies for boarding students, Team equipment and many teaching equipment were all damaged or lost.

" The most heartbreaking thing is that all the books of 410 students were swept away and damaged. Many students burst into tears when they saw their notebooks covered in mud, each page blurred. Others quietly searched and cleaned each remaining item in the mud to reuse ," Mr. Luong said emotionally.

After the storm, floodwaters continued to rise and inundate the school, leaving behind mud and scattered desks and chairs. Many students proactively suggested that teachers join in cleaning and restoring the school.

" About 120 students participated in the cleanup, including 100 boarding students and 20 students from the surrounding area. They were responsible for cleaning and washing tables, chairs, equipment, and school supplies. Those who were in good health volunteered to clean up trash and push away mud ," said the principal.

To ensure safety, Mo Vang Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities has temporarily suspended classes from September 30 until the basic facilities are repaired. The school board has proposed that classes that have lost all their materials be re-equipped with essential books.

Boarding students are provided with blankets, mattresses and personal belongings to ensure their living conditions. Regarding the curriculum, the school plans to organize make-up classes but must balance them to avoid overloading both teachers and students.

In the report sent to superiors and local authorities, the school proposed support in the following order: Rice, dry food, and daily necessities for students; blankets, mattresses, and bedding for boarding students; materials and equipment for teaching and repairing facilities.

At the same time, the school recommended that localities strengthen direction of disaster prevention and control work at educational institutions, and promptly have plans to reinforce and relocate high-risk structures to ensure long-term safety.

Like Mo Vang Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, with the motto "where the water recedes, clean up there", many schools in Lao Cai are still "racing" against time to overcome the damage and bring students back soon. However, the heavy damage after the storm and flood is still a big challenge for the recovery work in the locality.

According to the report of the Department of Education and Training of Lao Cai province, storm No. 10 (Bualoi) caused heavy rain, water levels in rivers and streams rose, leaving many damages to facilities in the education sector.

According to statistics, 65 schools in the whole province were damaged, specifically: 27 kindergartens; 13 primary schools; 8 middle and secondary schools; 3 secondary schools; 11 high schools; 3 vocational and continuing education centers. The estimated damage was about 30 billion VND, with no human casualties.
