A spokesman for southern Ukraine's pro-Russian forces, Nazar Voloshyn, said Russian forces had withdrawn from the Kanal district of the town of Chasiv Yar, a move that slowed Moscow's advances in the area, Reuters reported.
Ukrainian servicemen fire artillery towards Russian troops at a position near the town of Chasiv Yar, Donetsk region (Ukraine) on June 27, 2024.
According to Mr. Voloshyn, the Russian army shelled Ukrainian positions more than 200 times in the past 24 hours, mainly from the direction south of Chasiv Yar. In a report on June 27, the Ukrainian General Staff said that Russia launched six attacks to push back Ukrainian forces in Chasiv Yar. However, the Ukrainian side repelled three of these attacks and other fierce fighting continued.
On the Russian side, Mr. Igor Kimakovsky, advisor to the leader of the Donetsk People's Republic, announced on June 28 that the Ukrainian army had withdrawn from a number of important strategic areas near the city of Toretsk (southwest of Chasiv Yar and northeast of Avdiivka), and emphasized that Ukraine had recently lost dozens of soldiers in this area.
Earlier, Russian brigade commander Stanislav Orlov said Russian forces destroyed a communications tower on the town's highest point during the attack on June 27, according to Tass.

The town of Chasiv Yar is the gateway to the rest of Donetsk province, which Russia and Ukraine are still fighting for control of. Chasiv Yar is key for Ukraine, located about 8 km from the city of Bakhmut and holding high points overlooking a series of surrounding industrial towns.
Russian forces have been pushing into eastern Ukraine since February, seizing control of several villages since capturing the key town of Avdiivka. But the pace of Russian advances has slowed as Ukraine receives some of its weapons aid from the United States and the West.
