Ukraine claims to have used suicide boats to attack Russian naval ships

VnExpressVnExpress13/10/2023

Ukrainian security and navy sources said the country carried out two suicide boat attacks on Russian warships.

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) and the country's navy used suicide boats to attack the patrol boat Pavel Derzhavin on October 11 and the small frigate Project 21630 Buyan on October 13, a Ukrainian intelligence source said. The person did not disclose the damage caused by the attacks.

"After the first explosion, Russian minesweepers and divers could not detect how we attacked," the source said. "The Buyan-class frigate was attacked while sailing near Sevastopol using the experimental suicide boat Sea Baby."

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on October 13 that aircraft from the Black Sea Fleet "destroyed an unmanned aerial vehicle of the Ukrainian armed forces in the Black Sea." The agency did not provide any information regarding the October 11 attack.

Ukraine has recently used missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and suicide boats to repeatedly attack Black Sea Fleet positions and areas on and around the Crimean peninsula. Ukrainian officials claim these attacks are aimed at "preventing Russia from blocking the Black Sea" and helping them control important sea routes.

Tensions in the Black Sea region escalated after Russia withdrew from the Black Sea Grain Initiative in July. Russian forces then repeatedly used missiles and drones to attack Ukrainian ports and warehouses along the Black Sea and Danube River.
