Responding to Storm No. 10: Warning of high risk of landslides in Da Nang

Due to the impact of storm No. 10, many places in the city have had heavy and very heavy rain, warning of the risk of flash floods, landslides and widespread flooding, directly threatening people's lives and property.

According to the Da Nang Civil Defense Command, the amount of rain recorded from 7:00 p.m. on September 27 to 7:00 a.m. on September 28 in many places in the city reached high levels. For example, Tam Ky ward (102.2mm), Dien Ban Tay commune (98.8mm), Thang An commune (98.2mm), Phu Ninh commune (97.6mm), Hoa Xuan ward (96mm)... In particular, the water level in the Vu Gia - Thu Bon rivers is rising, and the Vu Gia river has exceeded the alarm level I. This situation, combined with continued heavy rain, will increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

It is forecasted that during the day and night of September 28, communes and wards in Da Nang city will have heavy rain, very heavy rain and thunderstorms. The total rainfall is forecast to be 70-180mm, with many places possibly reaching over 250mm. Specifically, areas such as Hai Chau, Son Tra, Ngu Hanh Son, Cam Le, Hoa Khanh, Hoi An, Dien Ban, Dai Loc are forecast to have a total rainfall of 80-180mm, with some places over 250mm, lasting from 04:00 on September 28 to 07:00 on September 29. Notably, the soil moisture model shows that some areas in Da Nang city are nearly saturated (over 100%). This increases the danger level, because saturated soil is very susceptible to sliding and landslides when receiving a large amount of rain.

The risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams in mountainous areas, along with landslides on steep slopes and land subsidence in many communes and wards in Da Nang city is very high. According to the report of the Da Nang City Civil Defense Command, there are 57 communes/wards in the city at risk of flash floods and landslides. These are areas that need special attention and people need to prepare response plans. Specifically, communes and wards such as: Hai Van, An Khe, Son Tra, Hoa Khanh, Lien Chieu Hoa Tien, Hoa Vang, Ba Na, Dai Loc, Duy Xuyen, Que Son, Tien Phuoc, Dong Giang, Nam Giang, Tra My...

To minimize the damage caused by storm No. 10, Da Nang city has actively implemented response measures, including issuing many directive documents, organizing online meetings, and inspecting the actual storm prevention work. Functional forces (police, army, etc.) are always on duty at key locations to promptly support and handle unexpected situations. In particular, evacuation work has been carried out, with a total of 61 people evacuated (54 people evacuated in groups, 7 people evacuated in a centralized manner).

The Da Nang City government requires people to strictly comply with warnings such as proactively evacuating from areas at high risk of flash floods and landslides (mountainous areas, slopes) and low-lying areas, urban areas prone to flooding. Minimize leaving the house or moving through deeply flooded roads, landslides, or fast-flowing streams. Absolutely do not go into the forest to visit fields, or carry out unnecessary outdoor activities during storms and floods. Continuously update warning information from local authorities and hydrometeorological agencies.
