The youngest professor candidate in Pharmacy, studied at the oldest school in America

Of the two candidates for the 2025 Professorship of Pharmacy, one attended the oldest school in the Americas; the other was trained entirely in the country. Both have had storied scientific research careers.

In the list of candidates for professorship in 2025, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Thanh Tung, born in 1982, is the youngest candidate in the Pharmacy field. He is currently the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Hanoi University of Pharmacy. Mr. Tung is from Yen Quang, Y Yen, Nam Dinh (old).

Before entering teaching, he was a researcher at the Pharmacology Department, Central Institute for Drug Control and Traphaco Company, Hanoi . His education path was almost entirely abroad - with systematic training.

Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Thanh Tung graduated from the University of Havana (Cuba) in 2007 - the school was founded in 1728, considered the oldest university in Cuba and one of the first universities in the Americas. He then obtained a master's degree in pharmacy specializing in medicinal herbs from Chosun University (Gwangju, Korea) in 2011 and a doctorate in pharmacology from the University of Sevilla (Spain).

In 2018, at the age of 36, he was recognized by the State Council of Professors as meeting the standards for the title of Associate Professor.

After more than a decade of teaching and research, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Thanh Tung has a large and impressive research profile. Up to now, he has published 149 scientific articles, of which 49 are published in prestigious international journals; completed 3 scientific research topics; supervised 1 PhD student, co-supervised 1 other PhD student, and is currently supervising 4 PhD students.

Not only is he excellent in scientific publications, he also has 11 exclusive patents and useful solutions - most of which are related to the preparation of medicinal herbs and natural compounds to support disease treatment, contributing to reducing treatment costs for people.

Regarding books, he is the author of 1 textbook, 1 monograph (Hanoi National University Publishing House), 2 international reference books (Apple Academic Press, CRC Press) and 17 book chapters from prestigious publishers such as IGI Global, Wiley, Elsevier

His two main research directions are: Evaluation of the effects, mechanisms and toxicity at the molecular level of medicinal herbs and natural compounds; Application of virtual screening technology to develop natural drugs with high pharmacological efficacy and low toxicity.

In 2018, at the same time he was recognized as Associate Professor, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Thanh Tung received the Science and Technology Award from Hanoi National University. In 2024, he continued to be awarded the Teacher of the Year Award at this university, recognizing his outstanding contributions in research and teaching.

For 7 consecutive years, he achieved the title of Emulation Fighter at the grassroots level. During 11 years of training work, he was always evaluated by his colleagues as a person with good moral qualities, good ideology, exemplary lifestyle and solidarity spirit.

The remaining candidate for professor of Pharmacy: Veteran scientist Tran Viet Hung

Along with Bui Thanh Tung, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Viet Hung (born in 1972) is also a candidate for Professor of Pharmacy in 2025. He is from An Noi, Binh Luc, Ha Nam (old), currently the Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Drug Testing Institute and Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Pharmacopoeia Council - Ministry of Health.

Graduated from Hanoi University of Pharmacy in 1994, he defended his PhD in Pharmacy majoring in Medicinal Materials - Traditional Medicine at the same school in 2007, and was recognized as meeting the standards for the title of Professor in 2015.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Viet Hung has guided 13 doctoral students, of whom 6 have successfully defended their theses, chaired 3 State-level projects, 2 Ministry-level projects and 1 City-level project.

He has 215 scientific articles, of which 28 are in ISI and Scopus journals, along with 13 specialized books and 2 useful solutions. With his outstanding contributions, he was awarded a certificate of merit by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health.

It can be seen that the two candidates for the position of Pharmacy Professor in 2025 represent two typical generations: one is the young Associate Professor Bui Thanh Tung, who has grown up from an international learning and research journey; the other is veteran scientist Tran Viet Hung, who has been involved in the domestic drug testing industry for many years.
