Critical condition due to self-medication

Bach Mai Hospital informs about a dangerous case of anaphylaxis (formerly known as anaphylactic shock) in children.

The patient is a boy named LAH (born in 2017), brought to Bach Mai Hospital from a private hospital, with high fever, infectious rash, itchy rash all over the body, fatigue, epigastric pain, difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, and abdominal distension.

Family members shared that 5 days before being admitted to the hospital, the child had a dry cough, no fever, the family bought antibiotics, cough medicine, and anti-inflammatory drugs for the child to take. Among them, there were more than 10 different types of medicine that the family arbitrarily bought for the child to take.

After taking the medicine for 1 day, the child had a stomachache, fever of nearly 38 degrees Celsius, itching, and rash all over the body. The family continued to give the child anti-allergy medicine, but it did not help. The child had more red rashes and itching, and severe stomach pain.

The family took him to a hospital near home for treatment, but his condition did not improve so they transferred him to Bach Mai Hospital.

At the Pediatric Center of Bach Mai Hospital, after a clinical examination and ordering some tests such as blood biochemistry, blood gas and basic coagulation, the doctors diagnosed the child with grade 2 anaphylaxis, suspected to be due to a drug allergy.

These include some antibiotics, expectorants, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-allergy drugs and some unlabeled pills.

After more than a week of treatment, the child has overcome the critical stage and has shown positive changes, gradually recovering his health.

Anaphylaxis prevention in children

Doctors at the Pediatric Center of Bach Mai Hospital said that anaphylaxis in children is an immediate hypersensitive reaction of the body when an allergen (medication, food, etc.) enters the body. This is a medical emergency that requires rapid diagnosis, emergency care, and early treatment, and requires active treatment to protect the child's life.

There are many risks leading to anaphylactic shock, from drugs, chemicals, vaccines, to supplements and foods, of which anaphylactic shock mainly comes from drugs.

Doctors recommend that parents, teachers, caregivers, schools and families need to properly manage food sources, medicine sources and chemical sources for children.

Absolutely do not buy medicine for your children without a prescription from a specialist at a medical facility, do not let children come into contact with chemicals, do not play in environments with insects, and strictly manage children's food and drinks.

When you see your child showing unusual symptoms, you need to urgently take them to the nearest medical facility.
