5-year-old boy's face swollen, vomiting after 30 minutes of playing with slime - 'ghost slime'

After playing with slime, also known as 'ghost slime', the 5-year-old boy touched his face. Only about 20-30 minutes later, the child's eyes and mouth began to swell, accompanied by symptoms of vomiting and fever.

A general hospital in Hanoi has just received emergency treatment for a 5-year-old child who suffered from angioedema after coming into contact with slime - a soft, flexible, shape-changing toy that is loved by many children.

According to the child's mother, after playing with slime, the child touched his face and complained of stinging eyes. About 20-30 minutes later, his eyes and mouth began to swell, accompanied by vomiting and coughing.

Before that, the baby was completely healthy, had no history of allergies, and this was the first time the baby had come into contact with slime.

Upon admission, the doctors conducted an examination and quickly determined that the child had Quincke's edema (also known as angioedema) - a form of acute allergic reaction that causes swelling in the deep layers of the skin and mucous membranes, which can cause airway obstruction if it spreads to the throat and larynx.

The baby was treated immediately with corticosteroid and antihistamine injections to reduce the allergic reaction. At the same time, the possibility of grade 2 anaphylaxis - a severe anaphylaxis that can be life-threatening - was closely monitored. The doctor also considered using adrenaline if the child's condition progressed.

Fortunately, after 20 minutes of doctor intervention and close monitoring, the baby's swelling decreased, no further symptoms appeared, the baby and family's psychology gradually stabilized and no adrenaline was needed.

According to Dr. Hoang Minh Hung - a pediatrician who directly treated the child, the hospital has received many cases of children with anaphylactic shock, angioedema, and hives after coming into contact with strange toys of unknown origin containing colorants, fragrances, or preservatives exceeding regulations.

Some children progress so rapidly that they experience respiratory failure, nervous system damage, and require long-term treatment.

Therefore, parents should be careful when choosing toys for their children, prioritizing products purchased at reputable stores, with clear origins and safety certification.

Avoid toys with strong odors or unusually bright colors, especially slime, clay, water toys... that are floating on the market.

In addition, if you see any unusual signs in your child such as itching, rash, swelling of the lips and eyes, abdominal pain, vomiting, coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, etc., stop contact immediately and take the child to the nearest medical facility.

The above child's case was very lucky because the family discovered it in time and the child received early treatment and monitoring, so he soon stabilized and did not experience dangerous complications.
