Some features of life in Kaohsiung

(NLDO) - Kaohsiung impresses with the way the government and people work together to build a friendly and civilized living environment.

Kaohsiung is not only famous as an important industrial center and seaport, but to me, this city also impresses me with the way the government and people work together to build a friendly and civilized living environment.

On a train in Kaohsiung.

One of the clearest demonstrations of the self-awareness of the people of Kaohsiung (Taiwan - China) is the way they use the public transportation system, especially the subway and tramway.

There are no ticket inspectors. People buy tickets themselves using magnetic cards or coins at automatic ticket machines. The system clearly relies on the honesty and self-discipline of the users.

Self-discipline

Such a system – like that in many Australian cities like Melbourne – would certainly save on staffing costs. And more importantly: it would create a progressive community culture where everyone feels a sense of personal responsibility. It would also foster a sense of community, which is a key element in building a modern, civilized society.

Not stopping at the transportation system, the Kaohsiung government also focuses on creating public spaces for the community. One of the most notable places is the Pier 2 area. This used to be an old warehouse area with a strong industrial imprint, but has now been reborn into a creative and vibrant art space.

Kaohsiung waterfront warehouses become art galleries.

Pier 2 is not only a place for residents and tourists to enjoy, but also a destination to discover works of art. The wide riverside walkway brings a pleasant feeling, while the craft shops and art spaces inspire endless creativity. The warm sunshine and pleasant weather of this late March further enhance the feeling of relaxation and I feel the government's concern for the welfare of the community.

Cultural exchange

Pier 2 is a place of artistic spirit. And perhaps a cultural intersection. The shops and works here represent diversity, from American style with "Transformer" models to a traditional bird market with strong Asian influences. Could this be a space for locals and international visitors to interact? In doing so, could it enrich the cultural life of this city?

Diversity is not only expressed through goods and art, but also through the people here – an open community, ready to welcome all cultures, creating a special attraction for the southern city of Taiwan.

Kaohsiung is clearly a model of combining industrial progress with quality of life. Perhaps it is also worth mentioning the housing here. The area where I live, including Airbnb-style apartments, is full of high-rise buildings, but there is no city center or open space like Pier 2 - Ben Song 2. The buildings are not high, the highest is 10 stories.

It seems that Taiwan's second largest city is not only a place to live normally, but also a place to feel and enjoy the value of community connection and love. But what I really suffer from - although the people in Kaohsiung are very enthusiastic - is the language barrier: not many people speak English - the international language, including the youth!
