Ho Chi Minh City should have new thinking and new approaches so that culture and art can truly become a source of inspiration and driving force for the city's development in the new period.

On the morning of October 18, at the Ho Chi Minh City Academy of Officials, the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee held a conference to summarize 50 years of Ho Chi Minh City literature and arts after the country's reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025). Attending were Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Tran Luu Quang, along with leaders of ministries, branches, city leaders, and prominent artists.

Vividly reflects the breath of life

Over 50 years of construction and development, Ho Chi Minh City's literature and arts have always played a pioneering role, accompanying the cause of building, protecting and developing the city. The team of artists and writers in Ho Chi Minh City has constantly strived to create, leaving behind many works of high ideological and artistic value, contributing to nurturing the spiritual life of the people.

Many literary and artistic works vividly reflect the breath of life, honor human values, criticize negativity, and contribute to promoting the city's spirit of innovation. In the integration period, Ho Chi Minh City's literature and art continue to spread creative inspiration; diverse topics such as history, contemporary, love, family, youth aspirations, etc. have left a deep impression, contributing to spreading the city's image.

Presenting a report at the conference, Mr. Duong Anh Duc - Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee - affirmed that the city always cares about and creates favorable conditions to promote the talents of artists. "The city's cultural, literary and artistic activities are always pioneers in integration and innovation, but still maintain national identity, shaping the unique characteristics of Ho Chi Minh City. This is an important foundation, meeting the strategic requirements in building and developing the city's literature and arts in the new period".

To date, the city has nearly 6,000 members in 9 professional associations. The literary and artistic associations operate in accordance with their principles and purposes, becoming a professional home that gathers and unites intellectuals and artists. The socialization of art has been promoted, creating conditions for private theater, cinema, music , fine arts, etc. to develop strongly, enhancing people's enjoyment.

Along with creative development, Ho Chi Minh City pays special attention to investing in infrastructure and creative spaces for culture and art. Large-scale art programs such as the Hozo Music Festival, the River Festival, the "Colors of Uncle Ho's City" Festival... contribute to spreading the image of a dynamic and creative city. Projects such as the Ho Chi Minh City Symphony and Opera House, the Phu Tho Circus and Multi-purpose Performance Hall, the Ho Chi Minh City Book Street, the Saigon Riverside Park... become cultural highlights, creating a space for connecting artists and the public.

"Entering a new development stage, Ho Chi Minh City continues to identify literature and art as a field with a particularly important role in building people, building the spiritual foundation of society, and contributing to the sustainable development of the city," Mr. Duong Anh Duc emphasized.

Expanding creative space

In the new stage, Ho Chi Minh City has entered the orbit of regional development integration. Developing literature and art in the new context does not only stop at preserving and promoting traditional values but also expands creative space, closely linked to the strategy of developing cultural industry. The city identifies this as an inevitable direction for culture to become the spiritual foundation and at the same time the economic driving force of a modern urban area.

In that spirit, at the conference, many delegates and artists proposed and recommended investment policies for developing literature and art in the country and the city in the new period.

Mr. Huynh Anh Tuan, Director of IDECAF Drama Theater, said that in order for cultural and artistic forms to truly come closer to people's lives, the city needs to focus on investing in infrastructure connecting traffic between cultural centers, theaters, museums, cinemas, etc. Doing so will create a "living cultural network", encouraging people, especially young people, to come to art more. Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc hopes that the city's leaders will continue to create conditions, encourage and motivate artists in a timely manner so that they have space to work, exchange, learn, create and contribute more to the public.

Speaking at the conference, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Tran Luu Quang said that the city pays special attention to investing in the cultural sector in parallel with economic development, including implementing projects to expand the Ho Chi Minh Cultural Space. In the process of rearranging the headquarters of state agencies, public cultural works are also among the top priorities, just after schools and hospitals.

However, the City Party Secretary noted that along with infrastructure investment, art units need to constantly innovate their thinking and ways of expression, inspiring the younger generation, helping them inherit and promote the values that previous generations have cultivated over the past 50 years.

The City Party Secretary suggested that the development trend cannot be stopped, each period, each generation has a different way of feeling. Today's youth may no longer be interested in performances considered old-fashioned but prefer modern, familiar forms of expression. Therefore, the city needs to innovate the way of expression, such as bringing the monochord and traditional musical instruments into harmony with contemporary music. "If young artists can sing on the monochord, the image of the monochord does not need to be promoted, because it itself has become a bridge between tradition and modernity. Therefore, the city should have a new way of thinking, a new way of doing things, difficult and new, so that culture and art can truly become a source of inspiration and driving force for development in the new period" - the City Party Secretary emphasized.

People's Artist DAO BA SON :

Affirming the position of cinema

After 50 years of development, Ho Chi Minh City can be proud to have formed a diverse and unique literary and artistic scene, vividly reflecting modern urban life but still imbued with the Vietnamese humanistic spirit.

If music is the heartbeat, painting is the color of emotions, literature is the memory of the soul, then cinema is the light - the light that never goes out on the creative path of Ho Chi Minh City artists. After 50 years of development, Ho Chi Minh City cinema has affirmed its position on the regional map. Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival (HIFF 2024) is an important turning point, marking the maturity of the city's cinema industry.

Singer VO HA TRAM :

Hope to have more performance spaces

For an artist, being able to live and work in a city that is always changing and always respects culture like Ho Chi Minh City is a blessing. I hope Ho Chi Minh City will have more performance spaces, stages, and music festivals so that young artists have the opportunity to perform and audiences have more places to enjoy.

Besides, I hope there will be more training programs to nurture young talents so that national cultural values can be continued and spread more strongly.

Director - writer XUAN PHUONG :

The greatest happiness is to create and contribute

Cultural workers should always remember that no matter what position or job, everything is important and meaningful.

I hope that today’s generation of artists will continue that spirit, ready to take on any task that the country and the city need. Because for an artist, the greatest happiness is to be able to create and contribute.

Commendation of 51 groups and 227 individuals

At the conference, the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City was honored to receive the First Class Labor Medal awarded by the President for its outstanding achievements in building and developing the city's literature and arts.

On this occasion, 51 collectives - including the Lao Dong Newspaper - and 227 individuals were also commended by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for their important contributions to the development of literature and art in Ho Chi Minh City over the past 50 years since the country's reunification.
