VBCSD - 15-year journey of pioneering in promoting sustainable business development

(Dan Tri) - Raising awareness of responsible business, bringing new concepts in sustainable business closer to domestic enterprises, and promoting public-private cooperation towards sustainable development are outstanding efforts of VBCSD over the past 15 years.

The journey of nearly 40 years of renovation has marked a resilient, breakthrough and development-hungry Vietnam. Now, a new page of development is opening, towards the Vision 2045 of Vietnam becoming a developed, high-income country and rising in the new era.

On that journey, the footprint of businesses is indispensable. The Vietnamese business community, in all fields, sizes and types - from state-owned enterprises, to private enterprises or foreign-invested enterprises - together create an important "piece" in the mission of developing a prosperous and thriving country in the past, present and future.

Carrying on the same mission, the Vietnam Federation of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) is always steadfast in its vision: It is necessary to build a sustainable Vietnamese business community.

In 2010, VCCI established the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD) under the approval of the Government , which has so far gathered nearly 200 member enterprises, organizations and a network of domestic and international partners, pioneering in promoting sustainable business development.

The year 2025 marks 15 years of VBCSD's persistent efforts to sow and cultivate the "seeds" of sustainable business in the business community through a series of diverse activities.

First is to promote communication and raise awareness to transform business thinking - from business for profit to responsible business.

Along with that, VBCSD also pioneered in organizing a series of activities on Sharing about sustainable development with media agencies since 2018. Thereby supporting media agencies to work more effectively, while promoting closer cooperation between media agencies and the business community on the journey of responsible business.

Another prominent action priority of VBCSD is to promote dialogue on sustainable development through the organization of the Vietnam Business Forum for Sustainable Development (VCSF) since 2014 - a platform for dialogue and action towards sustainable business.

With the appreciation of the Government, the Forum was upgraded to the National Conference on Sustainable Development in 2018 and 2019. Since then, VBCSD has contributed a series of input recommendations for important policies to facilitate sustainable business development.

Not stopping there, VBCSD is one of the few organizations in Vietnam that has focused early on promoting sustainable corporate governance practices. VBCSD-VCCI has chaired the development of the Corporate Sustainability Index (CSI), Vietnam's first index to assess corporate sustainability.

At the same time, VBCSD has organized the Program to Evaluate and Announce Sustainable Enterprises in Vietnam annually since 2016, creating a deep resonance among enterprises and receiving high appreciation and recognition from the Government.

VBCSD also pioneers in bringing new concepts in sustainable business closer to the domestic business community, such as developing social enterprises, doing business with low-income people, transparency and integrity in business, promoting circular economy , building a diverse, inclusive and equal business culture, etc.

At the same time, VBCSD actively promotes public-private cooperation to implement programs, projects and initiatives within the above-mentioned sustainable business contents.

At the VCSF 2020 Forum on the occasion of its 10th anniversary, VBCSD received a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister. This is a clear demonstration of the Government's recognition of VBCSD's persistent efforts in accompanying the Government and businesses to promote sustainable business.

Nowadays, the story of sustainable development is no longer strange. With the belief that sustainable development is not only an ethical choice, but also a long-term competitive advantage, businesses in Vietnam are proactively transforming, from strategy, technology to management.

They measure emissions, invest in renewable energy, practice extended producer responsibility, ensure worker welfare and create value for local communities. These are leading and pioneering birds such as Vinamilk, Bao Viet Group, PAN Group, Nestlé Vietnam, SABECO, AEON, Traphaco, Unilever Vietnam, Greenfeed, SASCO, HEINEKEN Vietnam...

15 years is a journey of building a foundation. 15 years is a journey of strong inspiration. VBCSD - VCCI has been, is and will continue to be the bridge between businesses and the Government, between national strategy and practical action, between trust and sustainable values, together with businesses and the country to step into the future in the new era.
