Why did the History Pedagogy benchmark increase?

VnExpressVnExpress26/08/2023

The benchmark score for History Education in most schools has increased for three consecutive years, reaching the highest level of 28.58 this year.

For a provincial school like An Giang University, the benchmark score of 27.12 for History Pedagogy is an unexpected level. Associate Professor Vo Van Thang, the school's principal, said this is the highest benchmark score in the school's 23-year history.

In fact, the benchmark score for History Pedagogy has skyrocketed (from 0.8 to nearly 10 points) last year and continues to peak this year in many universities.

The highest benchmark score for this group of majors belongs to Hanoi Pedagogical University 2, Vinh Phuc province. The History Pedagogy major of the school requires 28.58 points, meaning that candidates must score more than 9.5 points in one subject to be admitted. This level is slightly higher than the benchmark score of 28.5 points last year.

History Pedagogy is also the major with the highest scores in a series of other schools, including Hanoi National University of Education, University of Education - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Vinh University, Thai Nguyen University of Education - Thai Nguyen University and Hue University of Education, Da Nang University of Education - Quy Nhon University, An Giang University.

Among the largest teacher training universities, the benchmark scores have increased for three consecutive years in most schools. Quy Nhon University alone has decreased by 2.75 points compared to last year. Hanoi Pedagogical University, Ho Chi Minh City Pedagogical University, Can Tho University and Saigon University have this year's History Pedagogical benchmark scores decreased by between 0.01 and 0.84 points.

Professor Nguyen Van Minh, Principal of Hanoi National University of Education, said that one of the main reasons why the benchmark score for this major is high is because the quota based on high school graduation exam scores is small.

For example, at Hanoi Pedagogical University, the Ministry of Education and Training recruited nearly 70 students in this major, but only had 25 quotas for admission based on graduation exam scores.

Similarly, Master Le Phan Quoc, Deputy Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said that in recent years, the demand for History teachers in localities has not been high. This year, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education was only assigned 37 quotas, a decrease of 20 quotas compared to last year, while other pedagogical majors such as History - Geography, Technology, Natural Sciences have quotas of about 200 each.

Saigon University is only allowed to recruit 40 History Pedagogy students. Hanoi Pedagogical University 2, University of Education, An Giang University are assigned 20 quotas.

According to Mr. Quoc, the fact that History has become a compulsory subject in high school and may be a compulsory high school graduation exam subject from 2025 has made candidates more interested in History Pedagogy.

On the other hand, in the context of increasingly high university tuition fees, free tuition for pedagogical students and a living allowance of 3.65 million VND per month is also an advantage attracting candidates to this industry.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Education alone, the number of candidates applying for the History Pedagogy major increased by 40% compared to last year. Therefore, the benchmark score for this major is among the highest.

The high benchmark score for History Education is a good sign, causing society to change its thinking and perception of History teachers, according to Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen Thao, a History teacher at Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City. She said that in the past, society did not value History Education because of the low entrance score, which made History teachers less confident when they graduated and went to teach.

However, Ms. Thao and Mr. Quoc said that although they are optimistic about the quality of history teachers in the future, it is not possible to conclude that students like and pay attention to history just through test scores and benchmark scores.

"The History teaching profession has initially created trust, making good candidates choose it, but don't be too happy that high scores mean most students love History more," said Ms. Thao.
