Vietnam welcomes US removal of Cuba from list of terrorism sponsors

Vietnam welcomes the US Government's decision to remove Cuba from the US State Department 's 'list of countries believed to sponsor terrorism' and a number of steps towards easing the embargo against Cuba.


On January 17, in response to a reporter's question about Vietnam's reaction to the US removing Cuba from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang emphasized that Vietnam welcomes the US Government's decision on January 14 to remove Cuba from the US State Department's "list of countries believed to sponsor terrorism" along with a number of steps towards easing the embargo against the country.

"Vietnam's consistent stance is to strongly support efforts towards normalizing Cuba- US relations, including the US completely ending its embargo measures against Cuba in accordance with relevant resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly, for the legitimate interests of the Cuban people, for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the Americas and the world," Ms. Hang affirmed.

Previously, the administration of US President Joe Biden announced on January 14 that it would remove Cuba from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla has welcomed the US decision to remove Cuba from the list of countries that Washington considers sponsors of terrorism. The head of Cuban diplomacy said the US had just made a serious, important and right move.

The Communist Party of Cuba also issued a statement welcoming Washington's decision, considering it a victory for the Cuban Revolution.
