Vietnam warns citizens in the US to beware of scam calls

The Vietnamese Embassy in the US has warned of groups using technology to impersonate diplomatic agencies and officials to defraud citizens.

The Vietnamese Embassy in the US said on November 7 that it has recently received many complaints from citizens and people of Vietnamese origin about a number of individuals and organizations using phone numbers to impersonate officials and employees of diplomatic agencies.

These scam groups often call Vietnamese people in the US, asking them to cooperate in handling cases because they "sent prohibited goods back to the country", or notify them of legal issues that require investigation cooperation or problems with the document issuance process.

The Vietnamese Embassy in the US has recorded cases of using technology to display fake embassy and consulate general phone numbers, impersonating diplomatic agency officials on incoming call waiting screens.

The subjects also sent copies of official documents and summonses from the police, prosecutor's office, and court, and even connected with the victims via Zalo and made video calls so that the victims could talk to people in military uniforms, police uniforms, and customs uniforms.

The Vietnamese Embassy in the US emphasized that these are all acts of impersonation aimed at fraud that have been warned about many times by Vietnamese authorities and media as well as other countries.

This agency recommends that citizens who receive suspicious calls should absolutely not provide any personal information and proactively contact competent authorities for verification.

There are currently about 2.2 million Vietnamese people living, studying and working in the US.
