Vo Lao actively repairs irrigation system after floods

Vo Lao commune is one of the key food production areas of the province, with a large planting area and water resources that depend mainly on the irrigation system. However, the recent prolonged rain and storms, especially due to the impact of storms No. 10 and No. 11, have caused landslides and seriously buried many irrigation canals, directly affecting agricultural production and the livelihoods of local people.

In the whole Vo Lao commune, 11 irrigation works were severely damaged and many works were affected.

According to statistics from the People's Committee of Vo Lao commune, the whole commune has up to 11 irrigation works severely damaged, with estimated damage of more than 1 billion VND; in which, many sections of water canals were eroded, broken or buried due to mud flowing down from the hillsides after heavy rain.

In Ngau 2 village, 63 households and 16 hectares of agricultural land were directly affected by the flood of the rising Vo Lao stream, causing most of the rice fields to be deeply submerged. The irrigation canal system, about 2 km long, which supplies water for irrigation and aquaculture, was also seriously affected.

Immediately after the flood ended, villagers proactively divided into groups, checked the flow of water on the canals, detected leaks, dredged mud, cleared grass, and contributed to protecting the canals from the risk of further damage.

People of Ngau 2 village fix the problem of irrigation ditch being filled up after flood.

Working with the villagers to quickly dredge the ditch that had been buried by mud, Mr. Lu Van Them, Head of Ngau 2 Village, said: “At the end of September and the beginning of October, there was heavy rain in the village. Floodwaters carried mud, rocks and gravels, burying the village canals. If this situation continues, the water could destroy the ditch banks, so when the rain stopped and the flood receded, we mobilized the villagers to check, clean up and promptly remedy the consequences.”

To ensure the operation of the irrigation system, the authorities of Vo Lao commune quickly directed the irrigation teams to deploy many temporary solutions. Mr. Dao Quang Dong, an official of the Economic Department of Vo Lao commune, said: "In the locations where the irrigation ditches were broken, the commune directed the irrigation team to use HDPE pipes to replace the broken and washed away ditches. For the flooded and muddy irrigation works, dredging and clearing were carried out to ensure irrigation water for the commune's winter crop area."

Many irrigation ditches were broken, so irrigation teams used HDPE pipes to reconnect them.

According to damage statistics from the People's Committee of Vo Lao commune, the circulation after storm No. 10 caused severe damage to nearly 70 hectares of agricultural production. The irrigation system serving the above agricultural area was washed away, broken and filled with sediment, making irrigation still limited. Although the local government and people are trying to overcome the consequences, the attention of functional sectors is needed so that the irrigation system can be invested and upgraded in the near future.

There needs to be a long-term plan to ensure stable production.

Not only focusing on temporary solutions, Vo Lao commune has proactively developed long-term plans to ensure the safety of the irrigation system to meet the requirements of agricultural production. Currently, the People's Committee of the commune is reviewing and making a list of projects that need investment in repair and maintenance and proposing to competent authorities to support funding for implementation.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Duc - Vice Chairman of Vo Lao Commune People's Committee, shared: "Taking advantage of favorable weather, we have urgently checked the irrigation canal system; focused on fixing and repairing to keep the water flowing. Currently, we have directly reported to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, compiled a damage report to the Department of Finance to submit to the province for a thorough solution for the people."

Efforts to clear the flow of irrigation canals in Vo Lao.

However, according to Mr. Duc, currently, in Vo Lao commune, there are many small-scale irrigation works that were built a long time ago, with simple structures; the previous construction methods were mainly manual, so after a long time of use, they have degraded, causing difficulties in management, exploitation and operation of water supply, serving production. Meanwhile, due to the impact of climate change, the frequency and intensity of floods have increased, causing great pressure on the works. Therefore, to ensure the irrigation system, it is necessary to have careful planning and calculation, and to thoroughly overcome the long-term problems.

Many damaged irrigation canals have been repaired, bringing water to the fields in time to serve the winter crop production of the people.

Natural disasters are inevitable, but with the proactive and flexible government and the solidarity and efforts of the people, Vo Lao commune is gradually overcoming difficulties and stabilizing the irrigation system - a key factor in agricultural production. These timely actions not only help protect the immediate crop, but also contribute to ensuring long-term livelihoods for households in the commune.
