King Maha Vajiralongkorn approved Thailand's new cabinet, in which Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin will concurrently hold the position of Finance Minister.

"Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has selected a cabinet qualified to run the country. Therefore, the King accepts the new cabinet," a statement from the Thai royal palace said today.

Thailand's new cabinet is headed by Prime Minister Srettha. Mr. Srettha will also hold the position of Finance Minister. Anutin Charnvirakul, a former health minister, was appointed Deputy Prime Minister, and national police chief Patcharawat Wongsuwan was appointed Minister of Natural Resources and Environment.

Political analyst Yuttaporn Issarachai said the move showed Thailand was getting closer to having a new government. "The new cabinet needs to swear allegiance to the king and announce their policies in parliament. After that, the cabinet is considered fully functional," Yuttaporn said.

Property tycoon Srettha, the Pheu Thai Party candidate, received enough votes in parliament on August 22 to become Thailand's new leader. Outgoing Thai Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said Mr. Srettha's cabinet could start working around mid-September.

Mr Srettha said earlier that the first cabinet meeting would address the cost of living issue by reducing electricity and gas prices, and easing visa rules for Chinese to boost tourism.
