YouTube's move comes after other online entertainment services such as Netflix and Disney+ have increased their monthly subscription prices. Google's video- sharing platform currently has more than 2.7 billion monthly users and will have about 80 million paying accounts (in the form of Premium) affected after the company increased its prices.
YouTube Music, which includes YouTube's premium video and music streaming service, is increasing its price starting in early November for all subscription types, from individuals to families to student plans. The price increase is taking place in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Chile, Germany, Poland, and Türkiye. In the US, YouTube Premium has been increasing its price since last summer.
YouTube begins to increase Premium package prices in many countries around the world.
The exact price changes depend on the subscription type and the currency in each country, but in general, the increase will be around 30%. For example, in Germany, the price of the individual plan will increase by only 1 euro, from 12 to 13 euros, but the family plan will increase by 30%. Existing subscription accounts will start paying the new fee from the next bill.
In an email to customers announcing the adjustment, YouTube said the company "thought a lot" before making the decision, adding that the new price would help improve the quality of the Premium package as well as support content creators and artists operating on the platform.
The price hike comes almost immediately after YouTube began blocking users from viewing content if they use ad blockers, pushing them to pay a subscription fee to experience the service seamlessly, or having to accept viewing ads.
