Alphabet announced on September 29 that it would pay $24.5 million to settle a lawsuit aimed at banning Donald Trump from using YouTube. Of that, $22 million will go to the US President, while the remaining $2.5 million will be paid to co-plaintiffs, including the American Conservative Union and a series of other figures.
Six days after the Capitol riots in early 2021, YouTube announced it would suspend Mr. Trump's account for "at least a week" due to concerns about the risk of violence.
"We will reopen the account," YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said in March 2021. "But only if we see a reduction in law enforcement activity in the US capital, if we don't see government agencies issuing different warnings, will that be a signal that it's safe to reopen the channel."
In July 2021, Trump sued three major platforms, including Twitter (now X), Alphabet's YouTube, and Meta in Florida, accusing them of violating his free speech rights. The lawsuit was then transferred to California, where Alphabet is headquartered.
Restrictions on Trump's YouTube account were lifted in March 2023. Both X and Meta had previously reinstated Trump's account on their platforms.
According to court records, Mr. Trump decided to transfer $22 million to the National Mall Foundation, a nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, to build a grand ballroom on the White House grounds.
Trump has previously reached agreements with X and Meta to settle individual lawsuits. In January, Meta agreed to pay $25 million to settle a 2021 lawsuit related to the suspension of his Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Elon Musk's company, X, paid $10 million to settle a similar lawsuit with Trump in February. In total, the current US president has collected more than $57 million in settlements related to the ban on him using popular social media platforms after the events of January 6, 2021.
In addition to the lawsuits related to the account suspension, Trump also received a $16 million settlement from Disney in 2024 for a defamation lawsuit and $16 million from Paramount in July for a legal dispute related to a CBS interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris.
