Information from the 108 Military Central Hospital said that recently, two doctors from the hospital promptly provided emergency aid and saved the life of a 5-year-old girl who drowned in the swimming pool of a hotel in Ha Long.
Doctor Hoang Anh Tuan - Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, 108 Central Military Hospital said that during a business trip to attend a professional conference in Ha Long, he and a colleague accidentally heard a cry for help from someone drowning in the swimming pool.
Afterwards, a drowning girl was brought to shore and a man turned her upside down to let the water drain out, but the girl's cyanosis did not improve.
Drowning is a common condition in children in the summer, so it is necessary to know how to give first aid properly to save the child's life in time. Illustration photo
Realizing the baby's critical condition, Dr. Tuan and Dr. Ha Hoai Nam (a colleague in the same department) immediately placed the baby on a hard surface and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation: chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
After about 2 minutes of chest compressions, seeing that there was a lot of food coming back up from the stomach in the baby's mouth, Dr. Nam and a doctor from Hanoi Obstetrics Hospital cleared the baby's airway. After 5 minutes of first aid, the baby regained consciousness and was taken to the nearest medical center for further treatment.
"The next morning, when we met again, the family happily announced that the baby's test results were all good," Dr. Tuan recalled.
According to Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan, when drowning occurs, first aid is extremely important. In this case, carrying the drowning victim upside down is not an appropriate first aid method.
" Many people mistakenly believe that this action will help remove water from the child's respiratory system and help the child breathe on their own. However, it only delays more important first aid steps, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The amount of water entering the lungs during drowning is usually not much and can be discharged when performing CPR and when the child can breathe on his own. Delaying CPR and CPR increases the risk of irreversible brain damage due to lack of oxygen ," said Dr. Tuan.
Accordingly, this doctor recommends that the first thing to do in first aid for drowning children is to lift the child out of the water. Then assess the child's condition to see if he or she has stopped breathing or has stopped breathing. If so, quickly perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and notify people around to call 115 emergency.
Chest compression position: Above the sternum, at the same level as the nipple line. Press down on the chest about 1/3 - 1/2 deep. Chest compression rate 100 times/minute.
If you are the only one performing first aid: Perform 30 chest compressions, then 2 rescue breaths. If there are 2 rescuers: Perform 15 chest compressions, then 2 rescue breaths. After every 2 minutes, reassess whether the child is breathing again or has a pulse. After the child has a heartbeat and breathing again, quickly take the child to a medical facility to check the function after CPR.
Experts warn that drowning is a common problem in the summer, especially for young children who accidentally fall into ponds, lakes, swimming pools, or go swimming without adult supervision. Therefore, first aid for drowning children before taking them to the hospital is extremely important, determining the health and even the life of the child.
