Due to the impact of the weather right from the beginning of the season when watering for fruit, about 30% of the Lai Vung red tangerine area in Dong Thap province lost fruit, affecting the yield of this year's Tet red tangerine crop. In return, the color and quality of this year's red tangerine fruit met the requirements, and gardeners are expecting a "beautiful" tangerine season.

Mr. Doan Anh Kiet, residing in Long Hau commune, Lai Vung district, said that thanks to early irrigation, the pink tangerine garden was not affected by hot weather causing fruit to fall, so the tangerine output is estimated to increase by over 15% compared to last year, with an area of 5,000m2 expected to yield 10 tons of tangerines.

"This year there was a lot of rain, the tangerine trees grew better. I used a lot of organic fertilizer combined with biological spraying, so this year's fruit was shiny, even and had more beautiful skin.

Last year it was about 1.8 tons/ 1,000m2 , this year it is estimated to have increased to 2 tons. The main thing at this time is to monitor and water the plants in time, instead of spraying pesticides or spreading fertilizers," said Mr. Kiet.

Mr. Phan Van Sang, residing in Long Hau commune, Lai Vung district, said that watering the fruit during the hot season greatly affected the yield. Thanks to the use of a lot of organic fertilizer, the remaining tangerines all achieved good color, water content and firmness.

"This year's yield decreased by about 20% because the time to water the fruit was during a prolonged heat wave, so a number of fruits fell at that time. Now the tangerines have color, I continue to use organic fertilizer to create sweetness and water content for the tangerines," said Mr. Sang.

Mr. Huynh Van Ton - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Lai Vung district, said that this year 30% of the area did not produce any fruit due to fruit falling during the flowering period, however the output was not affected, estimated to be the same as last year, about 4,000 tons.

"The agricultural sector is recommending that farmers grow tangerines in a safe way. The entire Lai Vung district has over 220 hectares of red tangerines bearing fruit. Applying organic farming processes according to the district's red tangerine garden conservation project, the red tangerines are increasingly of better quality and more beautiful," said Mr. Ton.
