Six people were killed by a swarm of bees after the bus they were travelling in plunged into a ravine and broke the hive.

Remarkably, everyone survived the crash, but the bus disrupted a nest of Africanized killer bees.

The passengers were stung repeatedly by angry bees, resulting in the deaths of six people. The oldest was an 84-year-old man and the youngest was an 8-year-old girl and her 47-year-old mother.

Fourteen other passengers were seriously injured in the incident.

Some were treated at a nearby medical center, while others had to be transferred to a larger hospital in Jinotega.

Disturbing pictures show some survivors with hundreds of painful stings spread across their bodies.

The Africanized honeybee, also known as the "killer bee", is a hybrid between the European honeybee and the Africanized honeybee.

The Africanized honeybee, also known as the "killer bee", is a hybrid between the European honeybee and the Africanized honeybee.

According to the Smithsonian Institute for Zoological Research, Africanized bees are considered much more dangerous than single-breed honeybees, as they react 10 times faster to disturbance and can sting 10 times more often.

These hybrid bees have caused more than 1,000 reported deaths in Brazil since the mid-1950s, and have moved north to countries including Nicaragua and the US, according to the New York Post.
