Core values from traditional to modern
The year 2025 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment and development of the University of Foreign Languages - Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Established in the context of the country entering the post-war construction period, the school was assigned the responsibility of training the first team of foreign language staff to serve foreign affairs, culture, education and economy .
From a modest training facility, the school has become the leading center in the country for training and research in foreign languages and linguistics. The staff, lecturers and students of the school have been present in many fields and many countries, contributing to spreading the image of a peaceful, dynamic and integrated Vietnam.
In addition to multidisciplinary training from high school to postgraduate, the University of Foreign Languages (ULIS) also develops strongly in scientific research, knowledge transfer, international cooperation and building an advanced learning environment.
To celebrate its 70th anniversary, the school organized a series of meaningful activities such as scientific seminars, photo exhibitions, alumni meetings, and logo creation contests that attracted more than 60 groups of authors from home and abroad. These activities are an opportunity to pay tribute to tradition and affirm the spirit of solidarity in the educational community, where generations of teachers and students work together towards the core values of a school rich in identity.
The past 70 years have been a glorious and proud journey for the University of Foreign Languages. From its predecessors as the School of Foreign Languages and the Hanoi University of Foreign Languages, the school has now become a core unit in foreign language training, foreign language pedagogy, international studies and language research in the Vietnamese higher education system.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Long, Principal of the University of Languages and International Studies - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, shared that over the past 70 years, ULIS has always been proud of its own identity that has been nurtured and preserved through many generations of teachers and students. According to Dr. Xuan Long, “Innovation - National Responsibility - Sustainable Development” is the guiding principle for all activities of the University.
“Innovation is the driving force for us to dare to think, dare to do, dare to change to adapt to global trends. National responsibility is the commitment to contribute to the construction and development of the country through training high-quality human resources and serving the community. Sustainable development is the destination in every strategy, so that every step is steady for the future,” Dr. Xuan Long emphasized.
It can be seen that the blend of tradition and modernity, identity and integration has helped ULIS maintain its pioneering position in training foreign languages, linguistics, international studies and related fields of social sciences and humanities.
Entering a new development phase with a vision to 2045, in the context of increasingly fierce competition in higher education, the school identifies comprehensive innovation as a key factor to affirm its brand and position in the Vietnamese and international education system.

ULIS's innovation focus is implemented in three major directions. Among them, the most prominent is the open, flexible, interdisciplinary training program, responding to social practices and the global labor market. The second direction is the teaching method based on digital technology, promoting the self-study capacity, critical thinking and creativity of learners. And the third direction is the streamlined, effective, transparent university governance model, putting people at the center.

Creating knowledge, sowing the future
In the journey of creating knowledge and sowing the seeds of the future of the school, people are always at the center. Lecturer Le Thi Ngoc, Faculty of Japanese Language and Culture, shared that what has kept her attached to ULIS for nearly two decades is the proactive spirit and desire for progress of the students.
“The students are becoming more and more confident, knowing how to propose ideas, participate in projects, proactively learn, and be creative in their studies. I still remember the emotional moments when my students completed their first Japanese project. That was the moment when teachers felt most clearly the meaning of the teaching profession,” said lecturer Le Thi Ngoc.
According to lecturer Le Thi Ngoc, the decisive factor in training quality is the teacher and the student. Lecturers need to constantly learn and innovate methods, students need to be inspired with the spirit of self-study, integration awareness and adaptability. When both develop together in a modern, open educational environment and are supported by appropriate policies, ULIS will continue to affirm its leading position in foreign language training, contributing to the country's international integration process.
And that spirit of innovation is clearly reflected in today's generation of students. Bui Mai Ngoc Han, a student of the Faculty of French Language and Culture, said that studying at ULIS helps her and her friends "learn while doing". Students can participate in many experiential activities, international exchanges, language competitions, and large academic forums such as "ULIS Fire Day" or "Students Forum" - where students can showcase their ideas, directly coordinate seminars, operate projects, and lead research groups.
“Each activity is an opportunity for us to practice our skills, dare to think, dare to do and dare to be creative. At ULIS, teachers are always open, ready to listen and encourage students to develop their abilities,” Ngoc Han shared.
As for Dang Quoc Dat, a male student of the Faculty of German Language and Culture, he also felt a big change in the way he studied. “I have become much more mature thanks to being trained in independent thinking and communication skills. When learning German, we are exposed to German culture, thinking and lifestyle, so we are more confident when expressing our opinions, working in groups or handling situations. ULIS is a place where every day at school there is something new, inspiring us to try harder,” Dat said.
From those constant efforts, the image of the University of Languages and International Studies - Vietnam National University, Hanoi increasingly affirms its position in the system of Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
