According to the Straits Times on October 7, teachers in Singapore are the group of people who use artificial intelligence (AI) the most in the world in the field of education , with 75% of those surveyed saying they apply this technology in teaching or supporting students' learning.

This rate is twice as high as the global average of 36%, according to an international survey published by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The survey found that 82% of Singaporean teachers said that using AI tools helps them develop or improve lesson plans, while 74% agreed that AI can automate administrative tasks.

Overall, the survey results show that teachers in Singapore are very sensitive to digital technology, among the highest AI adopters globally, but are also the most cautious about the potential for bias in this technology.

Specifically, this group of teachers most often uses AI to summarize content and quickly learn topics (77%); create feedback for students or communicate with parents (69%), and design lectures or learning activities (65%).

Additionally, 40% of teachers use AI to help students practice skills in real-world contexts, or automatically adjust the difficulty of learning materials to suit individual students.

In contrast, AI is less commonly used for assessing or grading assignments (34%); assessing data on student engagement and learning outcomes (28%); and supporting students with special educational needs (16%).

Tools used by Singaporean teachers include platforms developed by the Ministry of Education such as learning feedback assistants, adaptive learning systems, lesson planning tools, as well as commercial platforms such as ChatGPT or Perplexity AI.

The report also found that Singaporean teachers had the highest percentage in the world who believed AI could make wrong or inappropriate recommendations.

Education Minister Desmond Lee stressed that while AI and technology are changing the way people work and learn, students still need to develop important soft skills alongside this change.

These skills include creative and adaptive thinking, critical thinking, cross-cultural understanding, collaboration, empathy and resilience, he said.

“These abilities have always been important, and are now even more essential. Students need to cultivate humanistic qualities that AI or other technologies can hardly replace,” he said.
