ACV proposes early construction of third runway at Long Thanh airport

Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) submitted to the Prime Minister for consideration to assign this enterprise to build the third runway early and be the investor of phase 2 of the Long Thanh airport project.

In a document sent to the Prime Minister and relevant ministries, ACV said that in mid-August 2025, the Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Construction and ACV to study and propose the implementation of a third runway at Long Thanh airport.

Long Thanh airport phase 2 planning (by 2030) will have 3 runways and 2 passenger terminals, meeting a total capacity of 50 million passengers/year.

According to the National Assembly 's resolution on the investment policy of Long Thanh airport project, this runway is 4,000m long, 60m wide, meeting the exploitation of Airbus A380 aircraft or equivalent. The third runway is included in the investment scope of phase 2 along with the second passenger terminal to reach the capacity of 50 million passengers and 1.5 million tons of cargo/year.

Therefore, it is necessary to quickly research and propose the implementation of the third runway and phase 2 of Long Thanh airport to complete the investment before 2030, in accordance with the approved planning and investment policy.

According to ACV, the first runway of Long Thanh airport has been basically completed, meeting the flight calibration requirements from September 26. The second runway was started in June 2025, and is expected to be completed in December 2025.

Long Thanh Airport Phase 1 will welcome its first flight on December 19, 2025, and will be put into operation in the first half of 2026 according to the Prime Minister 's direction.

ACV believes that if it takes advantage of the available manpower and machinery of contractors who have been constructing the first and second runways to continue constructing the third runway right from the time the second runway is completed (which is also the dry season of 2025 - 2026), it will save a lot of time and costs in mobilizing personnel and machinery, and shorten the construction progress.

In addition, early construction of the third runway and other items of phase 2 will also minimize the impact of dust, noise, and machinery and equipment needed to enter the construction site when Long Thanh airport phase 1 is put into operation in the first half of 2026.

Through the presentation, ACV submitted to the Prime Minister for consideration and decision to assign ACV as the investor of the project to build the third runway with a total investment of about 12,000 billion VND from the legal capital of this enterprise, without using Government guarantees, expected to start construction in the first quarter of 2026.

ACV urgently uses its legal capital to exercise the authority of the investor to select international consultants to prepare and examine the project feasibility study report, and submit to the Government a report to the National Assembly for approval of a number of key contents before the Prime Minister decides on the project in accordance with the law.
