AMD said in an October 6 announcement that it would supply AI chips to OpenAI under a multi-year deal that is expected to generate tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue for AMD, and also gives the company that created ChatGPT the right to buy back about 10% of AMD’s shares.
AMD shares surged more than 34% to their highest level in more than a year, adding $80 billion to the company's market capitalization.
Reuters news agency commented that the agreement between OpenAI and AMD is proof that OpenAI in particular and the AI industry in general are thirsty for AI chips.
On the other hand, the deal speaks to AI companies' desire to own the most advanced technologies, as many businesses in the industry are competing to create the most cutting-edge AI tools.
The deal includes supplying hundreds of thousands of AMD AI chips, known as graphics processing units (GPUs), to OpenAI over several years, starting in the second half of 2026.
OpenAI will build a manufacturing facility based on AMD's upcoming MI450 chip line. AMD executives expect the deal with OpenAI to generate tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue.
Thanks to the deal's ripple effects, AMD expects to receive more than $100 billion in new revenue over four years from OpenAI and other customers.
It’s unclear where OpenAI will get the money for its massive deal with AMD. The company had $4.3 billion in revenue in the first half of 2025, but has burned through $2.5 billion in cash to attract talent and invest heavily in developing new AI tools.
As part of the deal, AMD will allow OpenAI to purchase up to 160 million AMD shares at 1 cent per share over the life of the deal. The first tranche of shares will be awarded to OpenAI after the first batch of MI450 chips is shipped in the second half of 2026.
OpenAI has worked with AMD for years, providing input into the design of older generations of AI chips like the MI300X. The San Francisco-based company has taken steps to ensure it has enough chips for future needs.
