British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps has announced a £4 billion (about $4.9 billion) deal to build attack submarines.
According to Reuters, the above submarine construction contract was awarded to BAE Systems and is considered part of the program implemented under the framework of the Australia-UK-US Trilateral Enhanced Security Partnership (AUKUS) to build attack submarines.
The contract will secure funding for BAE Systems' infrastructure in Barrow-in-Furness, northwest England, and create 5,000 jobs. BAE Systems said production of the submarines would begin later this decade, with the first SSN-AUKUS to be delivered in the late 2030s.
Britain is pivoting its foreign and defense policy to the Indo- Pacific and is also seeking trade deals with fast-growing economies in the region after leaving the European Union.
