Apple Maps has a decade-long awaited feature

According to Neowin , in an announcement at the recent WWDC 2023 developer conference, Apple said the company will add offline maps to Apple Maps with iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and watchOS 10 later this year. This feature allows users to select an area on the map and download it to their device. Users can then find locations and use turn-by-turn navigation for driving, walking, transit, and cycling without Wi-Fi or cellular connection.

Apple Maps finally adds offline maps feature

If you own one of the supported devices and want to try out the offline maps feature, you can install the iOS 17 developer beta. Offline maps downloaded on your iPhone can also be used for navigation and viewing detailed location cards on your Apple Watch, in which case your iPhone must be within range of your Apple Watch.

Offline maps are not a foreign concept to iPhone users. Previously, they could use offline maps feature from rival apps like Google Maps. The main difference is that Apple Maps is a native feature on the device, meaning users do not need to install a third-party app.

In addition to offline maps, Apple Maps will be able to show real-time availability of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, sorted by plug type and charging network. Apple already offers a similar feature called EV Routing, which works through CarPlay and allows Apple Maps to track vehicle charging stats and suggest routes that include the nearest compatible charging station. Currently, this feature is only available on certain vehicle models.
