Apple Vision Pro is about to have a low-cost competitor

Unlike Apple's Vision Pro, the XREAL Air 2 Ultra glasses, which were previewed at CES 2024, are street-style, according to Android Authority . They have 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF) via two dedicated 3D environment sensors that provide simultaneous location and mapping to determine the user's position in 3D space. The company claims the 3D sensors will be the smallest on the market when the glasses launch later this year.

XREAL Air 2 Ultra is priced at only 699 USD

Like the Air 2 Pro before it, the Air 2 Ultra offers a Full HD view for each eye. It has a 52-degree field of view (FOV) at 42 pixels per degree (PPD). The company says its PPD is higher than the Vision Pro (which is said to be 34 PPD), which is also extremely high, with 23 million pixels across two screens, more than a 4K TV.

While the XREAL Air 2 Ultra isn't a direct competitor to the Vision Pro, its specs are pretty impressive. The glasses support a fast refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a maximum brightness of 500 nits. The company says the virtual display can simulate a 154-inch display from a distance of 4 meters. The XREAL Air 2 Ultra is compatible with a number of devices, including Windows and Mac laptops, Samsung Galaxy phones, and the iPhone 15 series.

Speaking of iPhones, the Air 2 Ultra also supports Apple's new Spatial Video feature. As we know, while iPhone 15 Pro users can shoot space videos thanks to iOS 17.2, they can only view them in 3D on compatible glasses. In addition to Vision Pro, users can also view these space videos on the XREAL Air 2 Ultra, as well as the Air 2 and Air 2 Pro.

Glass is currently only aimed at developer customers.

The Air 2 Ultra are not available to consumers at this time, as they are specifically designed for developers. The glasses have a titanium frame, weigh 80 grams, have 3-position adjustable temples, and are TÜV Rheinland certified for eye comfort.

The current pre-order price for the XREAL Air 2 Ultra is $699, which is about five times cheaper than the Vision Pro. It is expected to be available from March 2024. Developers who have previously purchased the Nreal Light AR headset will receive a $100 discount when they pre-order the new model.
