(Dan Tri) - During the final rehearsal before going to South Sudan, doctors and nurses of Level 2 Field Hospital No. 7 faced an emergency situation of a patient stepping on a mine in critical condition.

On August 14, at Battalion 38 (Di An City, Binh Duong ), Level 2 Field Hospital No. 7 held a general field exercise, preparing for the United Nations peacekeeping mission at the UNMISS Mission (South Sudan).

The exercise took place under the supervision of leaders of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department, Military Hospital 175 (Ministry of National Defense) and relevant agencies.

The hypothetical situation began with the hospital receiving a Pakistani male engineer with a penetrating abdominal wound in the liver area and second-degree burns (20%) due to stepping on a mine. The patient received initial first aid at a level 1 facility.

Upon arrival, the emergency team examined and treated the wound. After examination, the doctors determined that immediate surgery was needed to control the abdominal injury.

Upon receiving the order, the emergency room (ER) staff quickly completed the paperwork and procedures to take the patient to the operating room (OR) and perform emergency surgery.

15 hours later, the Hospital continued to receive a female UNMISS staff member from Brazil with symptoms of high fever, chills, nausea, and difficulty eating and sleeping for two consecutive days.

The patient was guided to the examination area, had blood drawn for testing and was diagnosed positive for malaria. After a thorough assessment, the doctor at Level 2 Field Hospital No. 7 decided to discharge the patient with a prescription and instructions to return for a check-up after 7 days or if symptoms worsened.

More than 2 days after the surgery, the male engineer who was hit by a mine explosion was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU). Here, the treatment team assessed that the patient needed to be transferred to a higher level to thoroughly control the injury and provide more specialized intervention.

Within 5 hours of the assessment, under the command of the 7th Level 2 Field Hospital, the relevant departments coordinated with the Operations Department (Ops) and the Air Ambulance Transport Team (AMET) to receive the Pakistani patient, put him on a vehicle in coordination with the Security Department to the airport (Helipad) and transported him by special flight. This situation also ended the general rehearsal.

At the same time, medical staff are also proficient in the process of receiving patients, activating emergency aid, and closely coordinating with the transport unit in coordinating the time and location of reception.

In addition, members of Level 2 Field Hospital No. 7 also practiced all stages of preparing documents, handling emergency situations, and operating the AMET air ambulance team. More than 30 simulated situations close to the actual mission environment were rehearsed in the training program.
