Vietnam-Japan relations at their best

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Vietnam - Japan Forum 2025 with the theme "Vietnam - Japan Partnership: Cooperation and Development in the context of global fluctuations" held on October 3 in Hanoi, a representative of the Central Policy and Strategy Committee emphasized that the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan is built on the foundation of trust and mutually beneficial cooperation. In the context of a rapidly changing world, the relationship between the two countries is not only of economic significance but also contributes to maintaining peace , stability and prosperity in the region.

Professor Nishida Tatsuya (Tokai University, Japan) shared his impressions of Vietnam's development speed. Mr. Nishida Tatsuya (Tokai University, Japan) gave an example: in 2008, when he first came to Hanoi , the road from Noi Bai airport had only two lanes, but now it has been expanded to six lanes with modern infrastructure - an image symbolizing the country's strong change.

"Vietnam-Japan relations are also at their best stage of development, especially after the two countries officially upgraded to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World in November 2023. This is a turning point opening a new framework for cooperation in politics , economics, science and technology and people-to-people exchange," Mr. Nishida Tatsuya affirmed.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ta Duc Minh, Vietnam Trade Counselor in Japan, said that the total bilateral trade turnover in the first 7 months of 2025 reached nearly 29 billion USD, an increase of nearly 10% over the same period in 2024.

Vietnam had a trade surplus of 1.37 billion USD, with key product groups such as textiles, footwear, processed agricultural products and electronics. Japan currently has 5,608 FDI projects in Vietnam, with a total registered capital of more than 79.4 billion USD. In the first 8 months of 2025 alone, newly registered capital reached nearly 878 million USD, focusing on processing, manufacturing, electronic components, real estate and renewable energy.

"FDI capital flows from Japan are of high quality and efficiency, a positive signal showing that Vietnam continues to be a safe and attractive destination for investors," Mr. Ta Duc Minh emphasized.

Expectations of expanding cooperation in the new period

According to Mr. Ta Duc Minh, the stable political environment, along with a wide network of free trade agreements such as CPTPP, RCEP and VJEPA, create great favorable conditions for bilateral cooperation. However, geopolitical challenges, technical barriers, limitations in deep processing and supply chain management still exist. Therefore, he proposed four new directions of cooperation including green transformation - circular economy, digital economy, infrastructure - logistics and high-quality agricultural products.

From an academic perspective, Ms. Nguyen Anh Thu, Vice President of the University of Economics (VNU), affirmed the role of the school in connecting global knowledge, serving the country's development. The school is committed to playing the role of a knowledge bridge between Vietnam and Japan, contributing to building policy solutions based on scientific evidence, promoting sustainable cooperation.

At the discussion session, delegates agreed that it is necessary to enhance economic, trade and investment cooperation, especially in the fields of high technology, renewable energy, smart infrastructure and digital economy. At the same time, developing high-quality human resources is still a key factor. Japan is supporting Vietnam in training thousands of engineers and experts through scholarship programs and on-site training. Expanding educational cooperation will create human resources to meet the requirements of technological transformation. Along with that, it is necessary to promote the role of enterprises in the supply chain, encourage Vietnamese enterprises to participate more deeply in the global value chain, thereby improving management and production capacity according to international standards. Japan has strengths in green technology, while Vietnam plays an important role in Southeast Asia - therefore, this cooperation has regional and international significance.

Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations were established in 1973 and have undergone more than 50 years of development. In November 2023, the two countries upgraded to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership - a solid foundation for regional stability and prosperity. In the context of a strong global transformation in supply chains, digital transformation and green transformation, strengthening strategic cooperation is not only of bilateral significance but also contributes to regional peace and development.

Mr. Minh
