Preserving identity

An Giang is a province with a large number of ethnic groups, mainly Kinh, Hoa, Cham, Khmer. The area of residence has a mix of ethnic groups and cultural diversity, bearing the unique cultural nuances of the Southwest region. From there, rich cultural values are formed with many folk festivals, traditional craft villages and religious works with unique architecture.

Mubarak Mosque, Chau Phong Commune is the center of cultural and religious activities of the Cham people. This is also one of the architectural works with the unique features of the Cham people following the architectural style of mosques in Middle Eastern countries. In 1989, Mubarak Mosque was ranked as a National Historical and Cultural Monument.

For the Khmer people in An Giang, preserving and promoting the Bay Nui Bull Racing Festival is an important cultural event. On September 20, the 30th Bay Nui Bull Racing Festival for the An Giang Television Cup took place at the bull racing ground in Tri Ton commune. This is an important event to preserve and promote traditional cultural values, while promoting the image of tourism , culture and people of An Giang.

Nurturing knowledge

Every summer, the free Khmer language class at Kal Po Pruk Pagoda, Oc Eo Commune, is a familiar meeting place for more than 200 Khmer ethnic children. With the dedicated guidance of teachers, hieroglyphs have opened the door to knowledge about their mother tongue, history, and traditional cultural values of the Khmer people. "The pagoda also maintains the practice of giving laptops and bicycles to Khmer ethnic children with good academic achievements," shared monk Thach Phong - Deputy abbot of Kal Po Pruk Pagoda.

Van Rau Pagoda, An Cu Commune is also a "common home" that teaches Khmer language to ethnic minority children. Monk Chang Ratana shared: "Classes at the pagoda for Khmer children take place in a simple space. The way children are brought to study is also very diverse. Some children are sent by their parents to kindergarten to learn to talk, some children follow their older siblings and then sit and listen to the monks' lectures." Currently, Van Rau Pagoda encourages learning by promising to organize exams and give valuable rewards such as bicycles to good students.

Hand over the "fishing rod"

By the end of 2024, the whole province had 13,736 poor households, of which 2,869 were poor ethnic minority households. In recent times, the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial People's Committee have effectively implemented many special mechanisms and policies of the Party and State for ethnic minorities to create a driving force to promote socio -economic development, eliminate hunger, reduce poverty, help people increase their income, stabilize their lives and escape poverty sustainably.

At the seminar on Ethnic Minority Youth Entrepreneurship held in Tri Ton Commune, Director of the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religions Danh Phuc informed that An Giang is actively implementing the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development for Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas, with a total capital source from the Central Government and local counterpart capital of more than 1,000 billion VND, including 10 projects and many sub-projects, components of the project. In particular, the province focuses on supporting ethnic minority youth to start a business through sub-project 2 of Project 3. The Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religions closely coordinates with the Provincial Youth Union to advise and implement specific plans, focusing on propaganda and training to change thinking and build practical startup models.

Mr. Danh Phuc emphasized that capital is available, the challenge is the need for the will and creativity of young people, especially the application of AI to create unique products, exploit the tourism and cultural potential of the locality, thereby rising to enrich and maintain national identity.

The family of Mr. Chau Nhay, born in 1955, residing in Ba Den hamlet, An Cu commune, is a clear example of the effectiveness of the right livelihood support policy. Mr. Nhay said excitedly: “In the past, my family was a poor household. Thanks to the local government’s support of 20 million VND in preferential capital, I bought a pair of cows to raise, increased my income, and gradually escaped the poverty line.”

Mr. Danh Loi, residing in Tan Dong hamlet, Oc Eo commune, also expressed his joy when receiving capital support for beef cattle farming. “The capital support helps us improve our lives, increase our income, and gradually escape poverty. In addition, we are also trained in livestock farming techniques, disease prevention, and ensuring that the cattle herd develops well,” said Mr. Loi. Accordingly, the project on sustainable poverty reduction of beef cattle farming in Oc Eo commune (Project 3 - sub-project 1 under the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction) was effectively implemented, supporting 20 poor, near-poor, and newly escaped-poverty Khmer households with a budget of 445 million VND.

An Giang is effectively implementing the policy of great national unity by providing practical livelihood support (through capital programs and livestock models), creating an internal vitality to help ethnic minority communities strive for sustainable development.
