Today (September 15), in Dong Nai, the Ministry of National Defense held a ceremony to hand over 6 hectares of dioxin-cleaned land, start construction of a dioxin thermal treatment technology system at Bien Hoa airport, and sign an agreement to supplement non-refundable ODA capital to support people with disabilities.

The dioxin remediation project at Bien Hoa airport is a cooperation project between Vietnam and the US that was launched in 2019, covering an area of ​​about 15 hectares. After 6 years of implementation, nearly half of the dioxin-contaminated land area inside and outside the airport has been treated and handed over to the Air Defense - Air Force and local authorities, serving socio -economic development and national defense and security tasks.

At the ceremony, the US Embassy in Vietnam and Major General Nguyen Dinh Hien, Commander of the Chemical Corps and Director General of the National Action Center for Chemical and Environmental Treatment (NACCET), signed an agreement to provide an additional $32 million in non-refundable ODA capital. This support is to expand the project to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities in provinces that were heavily affected by Agent Orange.

The dioxin thermal treatment technology system, the largest component of the project, has also started construction and is expected to be operational from 2026.

Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defense, said that the handover of 6 hectares of dioxin-cleaned land and the commencement of construction of a thermal technology system to treat dioxin-contaminated soil at Bien Hoa airport is an important milestone. This event demonstrates the commitment of the two countries' senior leaders and affirms the effective cooperation between Vietnam and the US in overcoming the consequences of war.

“Today, the thermal technology system for dioxin treatment at Bien Hoa airport was started. This is the key technology to ensure the success of the project, realizing the commitment of the Government and the Ministry of National Defense of Vietnam to complete dioxin treatment at Bien Hoa airport before 2030,” Senior Lieutenant General Chien emphasized.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Marc Evans Knapper, US Ambassador to Vietnam, said that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the US. The two countries are carrying out many activities to overcome the consequences of war, including searching for martyrs' remains, clearing bombs and mines, and supporting people with disabilities.

“We are committed to returning Bien Hoa airport to its original state, free of dioxin contamination, to serve economic development. The joint treatment of approximately 6 hectares of land and the commencement of the thermal technology system demonstrate the joint efforts of the Vietnamese and US governments. From there, we will continue to sign agreements to support people with disabilities affected by dioxin, while promoting many parallel activities to overcome the consequences of the war,” said Mr. Marc Evans Knapper.

The US announced a new contract for the dioxin remediation project in the Bien Hoa airport area . Today (July 27), the US diplomatic mission in Vietnam, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), announced the award of a $32 million contract to Tetra Tech to remediate dioxin in and around Bien Hoa airport.
