Disgruntled with 39 most criticized dishes in Vietnam, except for blood pudding which is... delicious, oh my god!

TasteAtlas recently updated a list of 39 most criticized dishes in Vietnam, making many people angry, saying they are so delicious.

Compared to the 45 worst dishes in Vietnam in 2024, this year's list has dropped to 39 dishes.

TasteAtlas' culinary rankings are based on 7,700 recorded reviews, of which 4,940 are recognized by the system as valid.

Blood pudding leads the list of 39 most criticized dishes in Vietnam

Blood pudding tops the list of 39 worst Vietnamese foods with 2.6/5 points.

This site is dedicated to this bright red dish made from animal blood, which when congealed has a jelly-like texture, and is served with peanuts and mint.

Although controversial due to the risk of bacterial contamination from the meat, the dish has not been officially banned.

Coming in second is mung bean sweet soup with 3/5 points - a traditional dessert, made from the main ingredient of mung beans, including coconut milk, popular in the summer.

However, according to the illustration accompanying the description on TasteAtlas, this is areca flower tea, not green bean tea.

Banh it comes in third on the list with a score of 3/5. The site describes it as a traditional rice cake made from glutinous rice flour, with fillings that vary depending on the recipe, but pork, mung beans, and shrimp are the most common ingredients.

There are so many delicious dishes, why complain?

The list of 39 worst dishes updated by TasteAtlas also includes gai cake, moon cake, nem chua, banh troi, che chuoi (fried rice cake), com (green rice flakes), quẩy (fried breadsticks), banh cam (cam sticky rice), xoi gac (glutinous rice cake), banh uot (rice cake with mung beans), rau jelly (agar cake), banh mi xiu mai (meatball bread), banh chuoi (banana cake), bo balls, goi bo (beef salad), banh da lon (pig skin cake), banh gac (popped rice cake), and rare beef with lemon.

There are many dishes that are super delicious or associated with regional identity that Vietnamese people love, but they also criticize.

Some of them are banh can, pho rolls, meat jelly, chicken salad, vermicelli with snails, vermicelli with fish sauce, vermicelli with fish cakes, boiled chicken, vermicelli with mushrooms, coconut-fried snails, cao lau, congee with offal, banh canh, canh chua, braised fish in a clay pot, and chicken vermicelli.

After being announced, the list of 39 most criticized dishes in Vietnam immediately attracted heated discussions from many Vietnamese people on forums and websites.

Most social media users disagree with this list.

On the Phuot fanpage, an account commented "I don't understand why I can eat all 39 of these dishes, except for the top 1, the rest are all super delicious and high quality".

"I can't stand the boiled chicken", "don't know how to eat it and still judge", "all delicious dishes", "all the national spirit and why criticize", "poor little chicken salad, it's delicious", "top 39 best dishes in Vietnam"... are other opinions.

On another forum, a topic written: "39 most criticized Vietnamese dishes, reading the names makes you surprised" encountered debate from many people.

Most expressed dissatisfaction because "it's all specialties", "why are you criticizing only delicious dishes", "it's completely nonsense"...

However, some people think this is just an assessment of those who do not really understand Vietnamese culture, it is for reference only, there is no need to argue or make noise.

"Let others criticize, I think my own food is fine," one person wrote.

Last year, the list of 45 most criticized dishes published by TasteAtlas also caused fierce debate. The top spot last year belonged to green bean cake.

This site writes that TasteAtlas rankings should not be considered the final global verdict on cuisine.

Their aim is to "promote great local food, inspire pride in traditional dishes and spark curiosity about foods you've never tried".
