Bayern's expensive rookie
Bayern Munich confirmed on July 30 that they had completed the signing of striker Luis Díaz from Liverpool. According to ESPN, the transfer fee is up to 75 million euros (88 million USD), including additional fees.
This is the Bavarian team's third signing in the summer transfer window of 2025, after central defender Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen and midfielder Tom Bischof from Hoffenheim.
Speaking on the day of his introduction, Díaz could not hide his emotions: “I feel happy to be part of Bayern. This is one of the top clubs in the world . I want to contribute with my playing style and personality, and try to win every possible title with the team.”
Previously, the Colombian star was absent from the friendly match between Liverpool and AC Milan at the weekend, and left the pre-season training camp in Asia to fly to Germany to complete the transfer deal.
Liverpool change stance
Luis Díaz is under contract with Liverpool until 2027. However, since the summer of 2024, he has expressed his intention to seek a new challenge. Although the two sides have negotiated an extension, the negotiations have not reached an agreement on financial terms and professional role.
In that context, Liverpool is still determined to keep the mainstay, rejecting offers from both Barcelona and Bayern Munich in early July.
A source revealed that Bayern had offered 67.5 million euros but was rejected. However, when the offer was raised to 75 million euros, the "Red Brigade" agreed to let the 28-year-old star leave.
Joining Liverpool from FC Porto in January 2022 for a transfer fee of 49 million euros (about 55 million USD), Díaz has appeared in 148 matches, scoring 41 goals.
In the 2024/25 season, he had impressive form with 17 goals in all competitions, contributing greatly to the Premier League championship under new coach Arne Slot.
Making way for Alexander Isak?
The sale of Luis Díaz is part of Liverpool's personnel restructuring plan under sporting director Richard Hughes.
According to ESPN, the Anfield team spent 290 million pounds to strengthen their squad this summer with notable names such as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Hugo Ekitike.
On the other hand, Liverpool also earned 190 million pounds from player liquidation. The money from the Díaz deal is said to help the team increase the budget to pursue the number one target - Alexander Isak (Newcastle United).
The Kop have approached Isak's representatives since the beginning of the month, while Newcastle are still cautious.
The Swedish striker is currently nursing a thigh injury and will not be part of the club's pre-season tour of Asia. However, according to some sources, Isak has expressed his desire to leave St. James' Park, giving Liverpool more opportunities to complete their next big deal this summer.
