14-year-old girl in critical condition after drinking alcohol of unknown origin

After drinking about 350 ml of alcohol of unknown origin with a friend, a 14-year-old girl in Dong Nai fell into a coma, suffered respiratory failure and was diagnosed with severe methanol poisoning. The patient is currently receiving intensive treatment at Children's Hospital 1 (Ho Chi Minh City).

Thong Nhat Hospital ( Ho Chi Minh City) said that patient LNKP was admitted on September 29 in a deep coma, loss of neurological reflexes, low blood pressure, respiratory failure and severe metabolic acidosis. According to initial information, he drank about 350 ml of alcohol of unknown origin with a friend, then had a prolonged seizure and was transferred to the emergency room at Thong Nhat Hospital.

Dr. Nguyen Thuy Trang, Head of the Emergency Department at Thong Nhat Hospital, said the patient was diagnosed with severe methanol poisoning and was intubated, put on a ventilator, given intravenous fluids, given alkali and given antidotes. Along with intensive resuscitation, the doctors quickly contacted and transferred the patient to Children's Hospital 1 for further intensive treatment. The patient's condition is still very serious.

Dr. Nguyen Thuy Trang recommends that people should only use alcohol of clear origin, absolutely not use industrial alcohol, and not drink excessively. Children and minors should absolutely not use alcohol or beer.

The doctor also noted that if unusual symptoms appear after drinking alcohol such as vomiting, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, etc., it is necessary to go to a medical facility immediately for examination and timely treatment. Those who have drunk alcohol with a patient with methanol poisoning, even if they have not yet shown symptoms, should also go to the doctor for monitoring and treatment if necessary.
