The 2.5kg baby girl was born healthy, despite facing an extremely rare challenge of having nine umbilical cords wrapped around her neck.

On December 15, pregnant woman D.TML (29 years old), pregnant for the second time, was admitted to Hanoi Obstetrics Hospital in labor at more than 37 weeks.

During the cesarean section, the team led by Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hai - Head of the Endocrinology Department A1, Hanoi Obstetrics Hospital - discovered that the baby had 9 umbilical cords wrapped tightly around the neck.

This is a very dangerous situation, requiring the team to quickly remove and cut each loop of the umbilical cord to rescue the baby.

According to Dr. Hai, who directly performed the cesarean section, the case of the umbilical cord being wrapped around the neck so many times is extremely rare.

"Such a multiple-loop neck umbilical cord can reduce blood flow to the fetus, leading to severe malnutrition and even fetal heart failure at any time. Therefore, the decision to perform a cesarean section in this case was very timely and fortunate for both mother and child," Dr. Hai informed.

Doctors successfully performed a cesarean section, delivering a healthy 2.5kg baby girl. The mother is stable after surgery.

Doctors recommend that pregnant women should have regular check-ups or follow their doctor's appointment and see a doctor immediately if there are any unusual signs.

During labor, if the fetus has the umbilical cord wrapped around its neck, the doctor will advise and monitor the birth to detect abnormalities early for appropriate treatment.
