Benfica lost points at home, Mourinho 'singed the referee's chorus

Jose Mourinho made his Benfica home debut in a 1-1 draw with Rio Ave, and he blamed the referee for disallowing a goal.

It was not the debut Jose Mourinho had hoped for. Benfica failed to win at home for the third time in a row this season – in all competitions.

Bruno Lage was sacked after drawing with Santa Clara and losing to Qarabag in the Champions League. Mourinho was aiming for a win to close the gap with Porto, but had to watch Rio Ave leave with 1 point – a make-up match of the first round of the Portuguese league.

Georgiy Sudakov continued to shine under Mourinho when he opened the scoring in the 86th minute. In extra time, Andre Luiz brought the equalizer for the away team.

The match had a remarkable turning point: the referee disallowed a goal from Benfica . In the 60th minute, Otamendi crossed for Antonio Silva to finish into the net.

The referee watched the VAR screen with the situation unclear. After a 5-minute delay, he judged that Otamendi had committed a foul and decided not to recognize Benfica's goal.

“ The first half was a bit difficult. In the second half we played well. The team was more dominant, played aggressively, created chances, always put pressure on the opponent's field and played with an attacking attitude ,” Mourinho said, looking back at the match .

He was angry: “ We scored a goal, and if this is modern football , where a goal is disallowed just because one toe steps on another toe... I don't like this football . But if that is the new law, then we have to accept it . ”

“ After a lot of effort and creating chances, we got a goal ,” Mourinho continued . “ At a time when we shouldn’t have conceded a goal, we conceded a goal. It’s unfair, but that’s the result . ”

The “Special One ” continued to attack the referee and was supported by Benfica fans: “ The match went the way Rio Ave wanted and the referee allowed it, which left us unable to do much. ”

Benfica are currently third in the Portuguese league with 14 points, four points behind leaders Porto and one point behind Sporting Lisbon.

Mourinho and his team will host Gil Vicente – the opponent right behind them – this weekend, before playing the second round of the Champions League group stage against Chelsea.
