The Department of Urology – Hospital 19-8 has just received and successfully treated a rare case, requiring the entire surgical team to handle it with extreme caution.
A female patient (33 years old, Son Tay, Hanoi ) came to the Urology - Andrology Clinic because of pain in the left lumbar region and painful urination. Through clinical and paraclinical examination, the patient was diagnosed with left kidney stones, left ureteral stones in the lower 1/3, and the left JJ catheter had been placed for 15 years and had not been removed.
In 2010, the patient had surgery to remove left ureteral stones and had a JJ catheter placed. However, due to being busy with work, the patient forgot to schedule a follow-up appointment and had the JJ catheter removed as recommended.

Because the JJ Sonde had been in place for 15 years, the patient developed large stones in many locations, the Sonde stuck to the stones and moved abnormally, making the treatment process complicated and potentially risky.
After consultation, careful explanation and screening of risk factors, the patient underwent surgery with close coordination between the Department of Urology, Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation and related specialties.
The surgical team performed ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy, removed the old JJ catheter that had been in place for 15 years and replaced it with a new one, then performed percutaneous nephrolithotomy of the left kidney to treat all the kidney stones. The surgery was successful. The patient was stone-free, stable after surgery and was discharged after only 3 days.

Through this special case, Master, Doctor, CKII Nguyen Tran Thanh, Deputy Head of the Department of Urology, recommends that patients after placing a JJ catheter need to follow the schedule for follow-up visits and remove the JJ catheter on time.
Absolutely do not be subjective or forget, because it can lead to serious complications, directly affecting kidney function and overall health.
When there are unusual symptoms such as back pain, painful urination, blood in urine, you need to see a specialist medical facility soon.
