Parents left, 3 children living with grandparents

Late afternoon, in a makeshift kitchen, Mr. K'Bieng (bon R'Da, Quang Khe commune, Dak Glong district, Dak Nong province) and his wife, Mrs. H'Jen, were busy preparing dinner for their three children (H'Nhung, K'Tung and K'Trung).

Dinner consisted of only a few pieces of meat and vegetarian rice that Mr. K'Bieng and his wife had asked for since noon. For many years, these charity meals have helped Mr. K'Bieng's family of five to ease their financial burden, and the children have not gone hungry.

Mr. K'Bieng and his wife have a daughter named H'Bet. Eight years ago, when she was in 7th grade, she met and fell in love with a young man from another locality. Just a few months later, Bet gave birth to H'Nhung when she was just 14 years old.

Talking about his child, Mr. K'Bieng sadly said: "No matter how much my wife and I advised her, she wouldn't listen. N'Nhung was born when her mother was not old enough, so she couldn't get a birth certificate."

H'Bét gave birth to two more children. However, when the third child was not yet 6 months old, the young mother left the child with her parents and disappeared.

Over the past 3 years, Mr. K'Bieng and his wife have searched for their children many times, but until now they still do not know where the children's mother is.

Mrs. H'Jen choked up as she recounted that there were nights when she and her husband stayed up all night to take care of their grandchild. The day his parents left, K'Trung was still being held on his back, and he often cried because he lacked breast milk.

The Ma ethnic woman sobbed: "I am also very sad. There are nights when my grandchild cries and I cry too. His mother has disappeared and has not returned home for several years to see my husband, me, and our three children."

While she sat talking, the H'Nhung sisters rummaged through the kitchen, looking for dinner. Mrs. H'Jen's eyes were filled with concern as the three hungry children opened each pot.

Mrs. H'Jen said that because she only had 3 sao of land, her family's life was very difficult. She and her husband were both old, and each day they worked for hire and earned about 180,000-200,000 VND. On days when they could not work, the whole family asked for charity rice to eat.

Today, Mrs. H'Jen and her husband asked for 3 vegetarian meals. Feeling sorry for their young children, the old couple bought an extra piece of meat to grill for the 3 children. Also due to malnutrition, little H'Nhung, although she is 8 years old, is still smaller than a preschooler.

Mrs. H'Jen continued: "In the past, H'Nhung's birth was not registered. Last August, the teachers came to our house to encourage her to go to school, so my husband went to the commune to register her birth. She was too young, so my husband and I sent her to kindergarten, and next year she will go to first grade."

Sharing about H'Nhung's situation, Ms. Dao Thi Ly, Vice Principal of Hoa Quynh Kindergarten, said that during the investigation, the teachers discovered that all three H'Nhung sisters had not been registered for birth and had not been able to go to school. After coordinating with the local authorities to register their births, all three children were admitted to school.

Ms. Ly added that due to difficult circumstances, the school created conditions for the three sisters to have meals at school. Also because of the previous lack of nutrition, the three sisters' physical condition was very small compared to their classmates.

H'Nhung is about to enter first grade next school year. Ms. Ly hopes that philanthropists will join hands to share part of the burden with Mr. K'Bieng's family and give more motivation for the three H'Nhung sisters to continue going to school.
