The Department of Science and Technology of Hai Duong has just organized the acceptance of the project "Using herbal supplements in raising commercial chickens in the direction of safety, quality, and high economic efficiency in Hai Duong province" chaired by the Vietnam Academy of Agriculture.

The project was carried out at 3 breeding facilities in Cam Giang district for more than 2 years with a total of 9,000 crossbred roosters (Dong Tao and Luong Phuong).

Each livestock facility tested 5 feed formulas including: Using completely industrial feed; basic ration; formula 1: adding 1% herbal mixture; formula 2: adding 1.5% herbal mixture; formula 3: adding 2% herbal mixture. The mixed herbal mixture includes: single gold, pearl, cinnamon, star anise.

After the implementation period, the mixed feed formulas had nutritional compositions that met the requirements of TCVN 2265:2020, the feed standard for colored-feathered broiler chickens. Adding a herbal mixture of single-leaf ginseng, pearl, star anise and cinnamon to the feed ration improved the growth performance of the experimental chicken flock compared to the control group without herbal supplementation.

Specifically, the weight of chickens when using feed according to formula 1, 2 and 3 is from 3.1-3.3kg/chicken. Meanwhile, for chickens fed entirely with industrial feed and basic ration, the weight is from 2.95-3.06kg/chicken.

Supplementing herbs at 1.5% and 2% of the diet best improved the feed conversion efficiency of chickens, reducing the mortality rate of chickens due to respiratory syndrome and gastrointestinal syndrome. The recovery rate of gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases of chickens using industrial feed and basic diets was from 91.4-91.8%, while chickens supplemented with herbal feed according to formulas had a recovery rate of 93.3-95.7%.

Herbal supplementary feed has the effect of improving function, improving meat yield and thigh meat ratio of experimental chicken flocks, reducing belly fat and belly fat ratio of chickens, reducing odor in farming... The cost to produce 1 kg of broiler chicken in chicken flocks using industrial feed and basic rations is about 53,300-54,300 VND, while for chickens using herbal feed formula it is about 48,500-50,300 VND.

The project was assessed by the Acceptance Council to be highly effective.
