Many years ago, Mr. Bui Minh Hai (born in 1990) from Thanh Hoa province came to Quang Truc commune (Tuy Duc district, Dak Nong province) to start a business. He got married and lived with the M'Nong ethnic people in the area bordering Cambodia. 10 years ago, Mr. Hai was trusted by the people here and elected as the head of Bu Prang 2 hamlet.

Living with the M'nong people and understanding their hardships, Mr. Hai has a desire to help them develop their economy and improve their material and spiritual life.

Supporting the poor

Since becoming the village chief, Mr. Hai has wholeheartedly helped many people with difficult family circumstances.

Like 3 years ago, in the village, there were Thi Thom (born 2007) and Thi Luong (born 2010) who lost both their parents. The life of the two sisters was extremely difficult.

Feeling sorry for the two children who had no place to live, village chief Bui Minh Hai, in collaboration with local authorities, called on benefactors to help. From the donations from benefactors, Thom and Luong had a 70m2 house worth 170 million VND.

Also from charitable sources, to create a livelihood for the children, Mr. Hai stood up to buy for Thom and Luong 5 sao of land planted with 2-year-old macadamia trees. At the same time, he asked for a pair of mother cows and calves for the two children.

In addition to the State's support for orphans, he connected with philanthropists and the Border Guard to support Luong with an additional 1.5 million VND/month.

Seeing that the children were illiterate, the village chief asked the school to help Luong go to school. At the same time, he campaigned to open two literacy classes for the villagers right in the village.

Previously, since 2018, Mr. Hai called on the sister units to support 9 breeding cows for 9 households. Up to now, the herd of cows continues to grow and develop, with a total of more than 20 cows.

In addition to supporting livelihoods for many poor people, village chief Bui Minh Hai also coordinated with local authorities to call for support to repair the village headquarters, drill water wells and build public toilets worth 190 million VND.

Every year, when spring comes, the village chief calls on organizations and individuals to take care of Tet for poor households, near-poor households and especially disadvantaged households.

Light up the village, eliminate bad customs

Bu Prang 2 is a particularly difficult border village with mostly poor households. Previously, people only turned on electricity at dusk and only had light bulbs in their houses, so most of the village was plunged into darkness as soon as night fell.

With the hope that the village would have a street lighting system for people to travel conveniently and ensure security and order, after becoming the village chief, Mr. Bui Minh Hai once called on people to contribute but was unable to do so. After a period of hesitation, the village chief decided to ask for support from outside sources.

Through the Party Committee and local authorities to connect with units and businesses, Mr. Hai has requested 63 solar-powered lamp posts and installed them on a 2km stretch of road in the hamlet. Currently, street lights have basically covered the entire hamlet, and people are very excited.

Not only bringing back street lights, village chief Bui Minh Hai also lit up cultural light, helping people move towards a civilized life and eliminating backward customs.

Mr. Hai said that in the past, any family that had a sick or unlucky member would go looking for trouble with others. They would look for people who had affairs, had miscarriages, or families that had people who died in accidents but did not properly perform the rituals to punish them, because they believed that they had offended the forest and mountain gods.

“They forced those people to slaughter cows, pigs, and chickens to offer to the gods, praying for the village to not have bad luck. Being forced to buy cows and slaughter pigs is like pushing people into a difficult path,” said the village chief.

To help people move towards a civilized life, Mr. Hai and the local government regularly propagate and mobilize, agree with the village elders to resolutely intervene and eliminate backward customs. Up to now, the basic customs have been eliminated from people's lives.

Mr. Dang Van Huyen - Vice Chairman of Quang Truc Commune People's Committee - commented that although he is young, Mr. Bui Minh Hai has many years of experience as a village chief. During his work, Mr. Hai is very dynamic and is absolutely trusted by the villagers.

“The people of Bu Prang 2 village have a prosperous life, with clean and green village roads like today, not only thanks to the timely support of the government but also thanks to Mr. Hai’s great contribution. The head of Hai village is also the one who has made the first contribution in eliminating many backward customs that have existed for a long time,” Mr. Huyen affirmed.
