On December 5, the People's Committee of Luong Son district and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hoa Binh province jointly organized a ceremony to export the first shipment of Dien grapefruit to the US market.
Dien grapefruit grown in Hoa Binh exported to the US for the first time
The first shipment of Dien grapefruit from Hoa Binh province exported to the US with a total weight of 16 tons was purchased by RYB Joint Stock Company from My Tan Agricultural Cooperative and Dai Thanh Agricultural Service Cooperative in Cao Duong and Thanh Son communes.
This batch of Dien grapefruit was sampled for inspection and all met the technical requirements and food safety standards as required by the importing country. After harvesting, the grapefruit was pre-processed, treated, packaged and awaiting export procedures.
'Technological secret' to preserve grapefruit for 4 months and still keep it fresh
According to Mr. Dinh Cong Su, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoa Binh province, this is the second year that Hoa Binh province has exported locally grown Dien grapefruit. Previously, in December 2022, Hoa Binh had a shipment of Dien grapefruit purchased by a business for export to the UK.
This year, the Dien grapefruit export market continues to expand with additional export purchase contracts to the EU, especially 3 export orders to the US.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hoa Binh province, Dien grapefruit trees have been planted on Luong Son land since 1980, and now the total area has reached 800 hectares, accounting for over 35% of the fruit tree area of the whole district. The annual output of Dien grapefruit is over 12,000 tons.
Currently, Luong Son district has 51.06 hectares, estimated output of over 700 tons, built and developed production and consumption chains, and has 3 grapefruit growing areas with codes for domestic and export growing areas.
According to Mr. Nguyen Manh Hieu, Head of the Department of Agricultural Product Preservation Technology (VIAEP), Vietnam has now developed technology to process grapefruit for export. Accordingly, fresh grapefruit can be preserved for 4 months but the peel is still shiny, original color, the segments are still fresh, delicious and juicy.
"This preservation technology helps Vietnamese grapefruit to be exported in large quantities by sea to distant markets such as the US and EU at low cost, to be more competitive," said Mr. Hieu.
