Every time Hanoi is submerged in heavy rain and the streets are flooded, social networks bustle with sharing familiar clips and songs: " Thank God for the rain, my streets are flooded ..."
People's Artist Tu Long, People's Artist Xuan Bac, People's Artist Cong Ly sing "Flood from the street intersection":
Flood from the Crossroads was first performed in Tao Quan 2009, performed by People's Artist Tu Long, People's Artist Xuan Bac, and People's Artist Cong Ly. The song takes its melody from the classic song From a Street Crossroads by musician Pham Tuyen, but the lyrics were rewritten with satire and humor about the flooding in the capital.
With the soulful voice of People's Artist Tu Long combined with the witty and playful style of People's Artist Xuan Bac and People's Artist Cong Ly, the song quickly became a storm. The lyrics " thanks to the sky for the rain to keep flooding " or " oh my street has been flooded since that day" became a gentle but profound satire, reflecting the urban situation of Hanoi at that time - flooding was a daily occurrence in the city.
Recently, in VTV's Weekend Appointment program, Meritorious Artist Lan Anh brought a completely new version of Flood from the Crossroads .
No longer the humorous, satirical style as on the Tao Quan stage, Lan Anh chose a solemn, luxurious but still mischievous performance. When the video was broadcast and spread on social networks, tens of thousands of comments appeared: "Listening to Lan Anh sing, I feel both amused and sad for Hanoi; No one sings 'flood' as elegantly as that!; A parody song that turns out to touch real emotions - we have lived too long with flooding rains...".
It is the contrast between Lan Anh's refined, classical voice and the satirical content of the song that makes listeners both laugh and feel sorry.
For many years now, Flood from the Crossroads has become a familiar background music whenever Hanoi has heavy rain. Every time there is a flood, people share old clips of Tao Quan or Lan Anh's singing, with the comment "here it is again". Many people consider the song as a way to relieve stress in the midst of traffic jams and floods.
Floods from street intersections have gone beyond the framework of a parody song to become an "urban memory" of Hanoians.
People's Artist Tu Long once shared: "We simply thought of bringing laughter to the audience, but we didn't expect that the song would live for so long. Perhaps because it speaks to the mood of Hanoi people - satirical but not harsh, sad but still optimistic."
Meritorious Artist Lan Anh said: "When I sing this song again, I don't intend to make people laugh, but rather to express my love for Hanoi. Because amidst the laughter there is still a bit of sadness, like nostalgia."
