Common diseases in middle-aged women

VnExpressVnExpress13/10/2023

Hormonal changes and an unhealthy diet can cause middle-aged women to lack nutrients, develop diabetes, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease.

After the age of 40, women's bodies undergo certain changes due to the effects of menopause. The risk of developing diseases at this age also increases due to inappropriate living habits, aging, age, and hormonal decline.

Here are some health problems that may affect women over 40.

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies

Women with an unbalanced diet are prone to iron, calcium, and iodine deficiencies, leading to fatigue and poor complexion. Calcium and vitamin D deficiencies also lead to loss of calcium and bone mass, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Common symptoms of calcium deficiency include fatigue, weakness, muscle cramps, and weak bones, while people with vitamin D deficiency often experience fatigue, back pain, hair loss, poor wound healing, and an increased risk of depression.

Diabetes

Some factors that contribute to diabetes in middle-aged women include genetics, lack of exercise, unhealthy lifestyle and poor nutrition. In addition, perimenopause can affect the body in many ways and lead to serious complications such as diabetes and osteoporosis.

Women should eat lots of green vegetables and fruits, limit sweets, exercise regularly and have regular blood sugar tests to prevent prediabetes or better control diabetes.

Heart disease

According to the World Heart Federation, heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. Poor diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, and high cholesterol contribute to the condition. In addition, decreased estrogen levels during menopause also increase the risk.

Premenopausal syndrome

Menopause is the time that marks the end of a woman's menstrual cycle. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the average age for women to enter menopause is 45-55 years old.

Women often go through perimenopause in their late 30s or early 40s. At this time, estrogen levels begin to decline, causing typical symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, sweating, hot flashes, irregular menstruation, and vaginal dryness.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis occurs when bones become weak and lose bone density. Women in their 40s are more susceptible due to the gradual decline in estrogen levels. In addition to its physiological and reproductive functions, this hormone also acts as a protector and maintains bone health.

Women with relatives who have osteoporosis should have bone density testing during menopause to monitor. Adequate vitamin D and calcium supplementation, appropriate exercise, and a healthy diet can significantly reduce the risk during menopause.

Breast cancer

Statistics from the US National Cancer Institute show that the rate of breast cancer in women in their 30s is 0.4%, 40s is 1.5% and 50s and older is 3.5%. Middle-aged women are at higher risk of the disease. Regular screening or mammography helps in early detection and treatment.

Mental health disorders

Excessive stress can also lead to a number of mental health problems. This can occur at any age, however middle age is at a higher risk due to physiological changes during menopause.

Increasing age combined with family issues such as aging parents, growing children and stress can make women more susceptible to psychological problems.
