The 2025 US Open has ended, but the echoes still resonate. An incredible 65-foot putt on the 18th hole at Oakmont helped JJ Spaun win the US Open in spectacular fashion.
But behind that moment, his close caddie Mark Carens had a question that made the whole golf world... laugh.
The moment Spaun hit the putt of his life, Oakmont exploded. Spaun screamed with joy, threw his club and punched his fist, then rushed to pick Carens up in an emotional celebration.
It's an image that will live forever in the memories of fans. But Carens himself has no recollection of it. "I just remember the cheering. I've never heard anything that loud," Carens said in an interview with SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio.

“I have absolutely no memory of what happened next. I don't remember JJ lifting me up. When people mentioned it, I asked again: Really? You really lifted me up? I don't think you could have lifted me up!”
However, what made everyone laugh was Carens' question when he reviewed the highlight video .
“What the hell am I doing with the umbrella? JJ threw the stick away, why am I still running around with the umbrella in my hand?”, Carens wondered.
A reasonable and... funny question. But it's also understandable: in that historic moment, Carens was still "working" as a true caddie - professional to the end, always ready to protect the golfer from the rain and sun, even when the surrounding atmosphere was explosive.

And speaking of throwing the putter, Carens revealed another interesting detail: he had to ask a spectator to point out where Spaun threw the putter after the putt.
Luckily, he found the club in a sand pit. It is now a “treasure” – like Carens himself – a devoted and irreplaceable partner in JJ Spaun’s miraculous victory at Oakmont.
An emotional and...funny behind-the-scenes story after a memorable victory.
