For a long time, many parents still believe that girls “just need to be obedient and studious” is enough. However, in a competitive and rapidly changing environment, if they are only good at book knowledge, they will find it difficult to adapt to life. A girl can be good at Math or Literature, but if she does not know how to present ideas, lacks cooperation skills or is shy when communicating, her opportunities for development will be limited.
Equipping soft skills helps students boldly express their opinions, not hesitate in front of crowds, and dare to challenge themselves.
Soft skills are the foundation for students to assert themselves. These can be communication and presentation skills; teamwork skills; independence and time management skills; decision-making skills and, no less importantly, self-protection skills, saying “no” to the risk of violence and abuse.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thao (residing in Tan An ward, Tay Ninh province) shared: “I realized that no matter how good my child is at studying, if he lacks confidence and courage, it will be difficult for him to succeed. Therefore, from a young age, I taught my daughter how to speak her mind, and encouraged her to participate in group activities to practice communication and behavioral skills.”
Equipping students with soft skills helps them boldly express their opinions, not hesitate in front of a crowd, and dare to challenge themselves. This is very necessary in studying, job interviews, and even in social relationships. In the modern working environment, in addition to professional skills, soft skills contribute greatly to success. A girl who knows how to listen, cooperate, and has a learning spirit will easily score points with colleagues and superiors.
If girls have the skills to defend themselves, recognize and handle situations, they will reduce the risk of being abused and abused. This is a "shield" to protect them from temptations and dangers. Soft skills also help them know how to love, share, and behave skillfully in the family and community. A girl who is both good at her job and tactful in communication will certainly contribute to creating a sustainable home.
Equipping children with soft skills is not the responsibility of schools or society alone, but first and foremost the responsibility of parents. Because the family is the first and longest-lasting environment that children are exposed to. Mr. Le Van Minh (living in Can Duoc commune), a parent with a daughter in 8th grade, confided: “I often spend time talking and creating hypothetical situations for my child to find ways to handle things. For example, when going to the supermarket, I let my child manage a small amount of money, or when having a conflict with friends, I advise my child to openly share instead of staying silent. Those small lessons help my child gradually mature.”
Parents can sow the seeds of life skills in their daughters by creating a safe, healthy living environment and encouraging them to practice.
According to many experts, parents need to accompany instead of imposing. Encouraging daughters to participate in extracurricular activities, social work, sports or soft skills classes is an effective way to provide children with a practical training environment. More importantly, parents need to set an example, because parents' behavior is the most vivid lesson for children.
Teaching soft skills to children, especially girls, at home is important, but to achieve the best results, it cannot stop at this scope. Schools need to integrate extracurricular lessons and creative experiential activities so that students can practice their skills through practice. Social organizations also need to organize many career guidance programs and life skills training for teenagers and children.
Soft skills are not dry lessons but practical provisions for children entering life. Every parent today, through their care, companionship and example, can sow the seeds of life skills in their daughters. And tomorrow, those girls will become confident, strong women who know how to take control of their lives and contribute to building a better society./.
