Construction of upgrading and expanding National Highway 62 is expected to start in September 2026.

National Highway 62 is damaged and degraded.

According to the Ministry of Construction , National Highway 62 is being studied for upgrading and renovation to meet grade III road standards, with a 12m wide roadbed and 11m wide road surface; part of the project to upgrade and renovate 3 national highways (53, 62, 91B) connecting regions and adapting to climate change in the Mekong Delta region.

This project has been approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1445/QD-TTg, dated June 30, 2025. The total investment for all three national highways is nearly VND 9,300 billion, including counterpart capital of nearly VND 3,000 billion, the rest is used from loans from the World Bank (WB).

In particular, National Highway 62 will upgrade the section from Km4+200 at the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway intersection to Km74 (Binh Hiep International Border Gate, Tay Ninh ) with an investment length of about 69km in Tay Ninh province.

Currently, the Ministry of Construction has assigned the Vietnam Road Administration to prepare a project feasibility study report and complete investment procedures according to regulations, with construction expected to start in September 2026 and be completed in 2028. After completion and operation, National Highway 62 will be handed over to the Tay Ninh Provincial People's Committee for management according to regulations.

Also according to the Ministry of Construction, implementing Decree No. 165/2024/ND-CP dated December 26, 2024 of the Government detailing and guiding the implementation of a number of articles of the Road Law and Article 77 of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety, the Ministry of Construction has transferred road traffic infrastructure assets to the People's Committee of Tay Ninh province, including National Highways 22, 22B, 50, N2. According to regulations, the People's Committee of Tay Ninh province is responsible for organizing the implementation of management, exploitation, maintenance and investment after receiving them.

National Highway 62 is narrow and degraded, but traffic volume is increasing.

National Highway 62 is the main route connecting the center of Tay Ninh province (Long An ward) with Dong Thap Muoi region. This is also the only route connecting with neighboring Cambodia through Binh Hiep International Border Gate.

However, since being put into use in 1999, National Highway 62 has never been repaired, only patching up severely damaged areas. The current road surface is narrow, only 6m wide, without a median strip, many sections are damaged and degraded while the traffic volume is increasing, especially during holidays and Tet, causing this route to become overloaded and often congested.

Over the past years, voters of Tay Ninh province (formerly Long An) have continuously proposed the need to soon upgrade and expand National Highway 62 to facilitate socio-economic development in the Dong Thap Muoi region and expand trade connections with Cambodia./.
