Doctors from the Department of Nephrology and Urology at the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital have just admitted and treated a 29-year-old man who was hospitalized due to a testicular injury while playing soccer.
This young man said that before coming to the hospital, while playing soccer, he had a strong impact on the groin - scrotum area, then felt pain and swelling in the left scrotum area. The patient came to the hospital in a state of severe pain and difficulty moving.
Through clinical examination combined with scrotal Doppler ultrasound, the doctor determined that the patient had a ruptured tunica albuginea of the left testicle and a hematoma in the scrotum. The patient was scheduled for emergency surgery, hematoma removal, and testicle preservation suture. Currently, after surgery, the patient's health is stable, the testicle is preserved, and he continues to be monitored at the hospital.
Doctors advise: The testicles are vulnerable organs in sports activities, especially football, martial arts, cycling, etc. Many cases of trauma can lead to necrosis or testicular atrophy if not treated promptly.
MSc. Do Ich Dinh, Department of Andrology and Gender Medicine, Hanoi Medical University Hospital, warned that shame and fear are major barriers that cause many patients to delay treatment of genital diseases, causing many people to suffer serious complications, even losing their testicles.
For example, recently, doctors from the Department of Andrology and Gender Medicine at Hanoi Medical University Hospital received and performed emergency surgery on a male patient (26 years old) diagnosed with a ruptured left testicle due to an accident while playing Go-Kart racing.
According to the story, during his honeymoon in Da Lat with his newlywed wife, while participating in a model car racing game - a "hot" entertainment activity, the patient's car unfortunately had a strong collision. The collision caused his lower body to hit the side of the car.
Immediately after the accident, the patient had a lot of pain, the scrotum and left groin were swollen and bruised. However, due to subjective thinking, the couple continued to have fun for two more days. When the honeymoon ended and they returned to Hanoi, the patient saw that the pain and swelling did not improve, so he went to the Hanoi Medical University Hospital for examination.
"During the examination and ultrasound, the results showed that the left testicle had completely lost its normal shape, the parenchyma was severely crushed, and there was a lot of blood clot. The patient was diagnosed with a ruptured left testicle and was scheduled for emergency surgery," said Master Do Ich Dinh.
During the exploratory surgery, the team recorded very serious injuries: the left testicle was ruptured in many places, the parenchyma was crushed, the surrounding soft tissue was also bruised, with many blood clots, and could no longer be preserved. The doctors were forced to remove the entire left testicle to thoroughly treat the injury and prevent dangerous complications.
Dr. Dinh shared: "This is an extremely unfortunate case. Testicular trauma is a surgical emergency. If the patient comes early, especially within the first 24-48 hours, the possibility of preserving the testicle will be higher. Delaying causes the blood clot to compress, the parenchyma to lack blood supply, leading to necrosis."
Through this case, medical experts issued a warning to the community:
- Do not be subjective with any injury to the lower body : Whether it is a traffic accident, a sports accident or a seemingly simple household accident, any impact to the scrotum or groin area that causes pain, swelling, or bruising needs to be examined by a doctor and assessed for damage.
- Time is gold : Feelings of shame and fear are major barriers that cause many patients to delay treatment of genital diseases. The first 24 hours (especially the first 6 hours) after an accident are the golden time for testicular trauma. Late examination and treatment can lead to irreversible consequences such as testicular removal, affecting fertility and psychology later.
Recognize danger signs
After scrotal trauma, if you experience symptoms such as: severe pain, rapid scrotal swelling, widespread bruising, nausea or vomiting, etc., you should immediately go to a medical facility with a urology or surgical specialist for timely diagnosis and treatment.
First aid before going to the hospital:
- Lie down, elevate the scrotum, apply cool compresses, and wear supportive underwear.
- Do not self-adjust or apply heat.
- If there is an open, bleeding wound, cover it with clean gauze before going to the hospital.
Preventing testicular injuries when playing adventure sports and recreation: Wear groin protection, fasten seat belts, sit in the correct position, practice before playing adventure games or do it under the guidance of an experienced person. Do not play games that are too risky or can easily cause serious injury.
