40 students hospitalized: Bacteria strain causing food poisoning discovered

(Dan Tri) - Regarding the case of 40 students hospitalized in Quang Tri, authorities determined that the samples of specimens and food contained the bacteria Bacillus cereus, one of the causes of poisoning.

On October 7, the leader of the Quang Tri Department of Health said that the results of testing food samples and specimens related to the case of dozens of students from Kim Thuy Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, Kim Ngan Commune (Quang Tri) being hospitalized were available.

According to the leader of the Quang Tri Department of Health, the testing unit detected the Bacillus cereus bacteria strain, which produces the toxin Non-haemolytic enterotoxin in one food sample and one clinical sample; the remaining 3 food samples and 11 clinical samples did not detect disease-causing bacteria.

Non-haemolytic enterotoxins produced when bacteria grow in the small intestine, one of the causes of food poisoning, are often associated with food that is cooked but left to cool or stored improperly.

Mr. Dang Van Duong, Chairman of Kim Ngan Commune People's Committee, said that after the test results are available, the government will meet with relevant units to come up with a solution.

As Dan Tri reported, at around 8:00 a.m. on September 26, many students at Kim Thuy Primary Boarding School showed symptoms of nausea and stomachache.

Kim Ngan commune authorities coordinated with teachers and parents to quickly take the students to the hospital. Of the 75 students showing symptoms of poisoning, 40 had to be hospitalized, while the remaining 35 were monitored locally.

Kim Thuy Primary Boarding School has 75 boarding students who stay at school from Monday to Friday every week. After the poisoning incident, parents of Kim Thuy Primary Boarding School were extremely indignant.

Parents said they were no longer confident about eating and living at school so they decided to let their children stay home.

Faced with issues that have caused public outrage, especially among parents, the Kim Ngan Commune government has decided to temporarily suspend the Vice Principal of Kim Thuy Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minority Students for 15 days. Parents have since brought their children back to class.
