On May 27, information from the Center for Culture, Information and Sports of Binh Thuy district (Can Tho city) said that Mr. Duong Minh Hien, owner of the ancient house of Binh Thuy, passed away on May 26.

Mr. Duong Minh Hien is the 6th generation descendant of the Duong family. This family is famous to this day for its architecture of the Binh Thuy ancient house.

According to the Can Tho City Tourism Development Center, Binh Thuy ancient house is located on Bui Huu Nghia Street, Binh Thuy District, first built by the Duong family around 1870 and rebuilt in the early 20th century.

The first owner of the house was Mr. Duong Van Vi, who built it as an ancestral shrine. His descendant, Duong Chan Ky, a wealthy intellectual businessman and landowner with high aesthetic and creativity, continued to restore and develop the work left by his father. The special feature of the house, which is different from many ancient houses in the South, is expressed through its unique architecture, with a soft blend of two Eastern and Western cultures.

After two wars, when many surrounding structures were destroyed, Binh Thuy ancient house was fortunately almost intact, protected and preserved by successive generations. The house is located on a plot of land about 6,000 m2 , facing East - West, surrounded by ornamental gardens and fruit trees that are green all year round, creating a fresh and airy atmosphere.

Binh Thuy ancient house attracts many tourists

The Western style in the house can be mentioned as the floor is paved with French imported ceramic tiles, the ceiling is decorated with patterns, and the luxurious chandeliers. One of the special features that impresses visitors the most when entering Binh Thuy ancient house is the rich collection of antiques. Among them, many valuable antiques are imported from China or from European countries.

The special feature of the house is different from many ancient houses in the South, expressed through its unique architecture, with a soft blend of two Eastern and Western cultures.

However, the Southern features are still clearly shown through every small detail in the house: Around the carved wood or the elaborately crafted reliefs with many familiar shapes in the lives of Southern people such as: apricot, orchid, chrysanthemum, bamboo, lotus, dragon, unicorn, turtle, phoenix, etc. At the same time, the most solemn position in the house is the pure Vietnamese altar.

"Mr. Duong Minh Hien has one son and one daughter, and two grandchildren," said an employee of the Binh Thuy District Culture, Information and Sports Center.

In 1992, the world cinema classic, The Lover, was also filmed here. The film tells the true love story of a young master named Huynh Thuy Le (a Chinese businessman in Sa Dec) and a French female writer.

In 2009, Binh Thuy ancient house was recognized as a national architectural and artistic relic by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This is also a famous tourist destination in Can Tho.
